Proof of Income

Hi,

My OH and I are full time employees (rather than self employed) and we wondered at what stage in a mortgage do you need to show proof of income? At the beginning, middle, exchange?

Thanks

When you apply for a mortgage you will be asked for this.
  • We needed to send it off with our mortgage application form (first direct)

Some companies will not even give a loan in principal decision without proofs. You are best to have all your ducks in a row and all paperwork prepared and ready, photocopies of all payslips for 3 months, passports, NI numbers etc etc. The more info you provide the less back and forth there is later.
  • I was just about to ask this very same question!! Thanks poster!

In addition, should 3 months definitely be enough? Do some lenders require more or is this the norm? Do they then contact your employer also or does this suffice as proof of employment?

Natwest just wanted my bank statements and they could see my income coming in each month, but I did give them payslips just to make sure I was covered.

and did they then contact your employer? or just go from bank statements and payslips? Just 3 months worth?

  • First direct spoke to my employer after i'd sent them all my payslips + proof of address. They even wanted my employment contract since i've only had my job 3 months.

Thanks for the info everyone. We went to HSBC to make some enquires, and as our account holding bank, looked through that to validate our income claims. All our payslips are online and wanted to know if I had to get thrm all ready now before we go speak to some other banks or if it can wait. I'll warm the printer up!
