I'm being polite, I understand you want to defend your pets, but it's very insensitive when the original post is about a dog jumping the fence and attacking a little girl.

Even more so when the final paragraph is
any advice as to who my friend can now talk to about this would be appreciated thanks - shes a quivering wreck this morning and is saying she wants to move but, that isnt feasible - and she has a new baby due any day so, obviously she feels likes shes trapped......
Please have some sympathy with the OP and be quiet.

People are defending dogs because ultimately its NOT the dogs fault, its the fault of the stupid OWNER.

When I was a sheltered housing warden the tenants used to bring their grandkids to see my elderly and very docile collie. I never ever left her alone with them - as much for her sake as anything. A child might do something which unintentially hurts or alarms the dog and I would hate a once in a lifetime snap result in a death sentence for her. But I repeat - some dogs are more dangerous than others because their jaws are so powerful if they do lose it. It's such a shame that staffs seem to have been adopted by the chav population in order to look 'hard' as these are the types less likely to look after their dog. I knew some people who never even took their staff for a walk. It was booted into the garden to do it's business and that was that. An accident waiting to happen.

There is a very big difference in "defending dogs" in general and defending the dog in question, which no one has done. In fact the opposite has been stated many times, with many posters stating that severe action should be taken by the authorities.

Yes, some dogs are extremely dangerous and IMO any dog that attacks a human without reasonable provocation should be destroyed. This doesn't imply that I think all dogs should be destroyed.

How many people are killed by drunken drivers, irresponsible drivers, speeding drivers etc?
Does this mean that it's wrong to defend the sensible drivers who would never commit any of these actions?

I'm not defending anything - but I'm blooming well going to fight back against idiot comments about "all rotties are bad evil monsters" same as I fight back against the other usual standards of "all Staffies just... well... turn don't they"... and all rough collies don't suddenly start barking because little Johnny's fallen down the well, or labradors bring you sheets of loo roll either.

I get sick and tired of misinformed dog-bashing - yes bad situations happen (I still maintain that generally something's kicked it off - and tend to look to the other end of the lead for the true source of the problem - although I've seen some disgraceful examples of kids trying to wind dogs up to kick off as well) - it gets incredibly wearing having to deal with the hysteria every day - and I get some flaming corkers having the dog muzzled... hint ladies - the one with the muzzle on is NOT going to be the one that bites you (she's got no front teeth left anyway so she'd have to lick you to death).

Like I say - at the moment my arm's black and blue because of someone's out of control collie - not one of the usual "devil dog" breeds.

Now do go away and be quiet.

The fact is that owners should protect their dogs by keeping them under control, and the legal description of a dog being out of control is incredibly strict and could be applied to a dog simply barking at someone. So the size and breed is largely irrelevant, though a court is likely to take it into account in any penalty they impose. Of course, the ultimate penalty being the destruction of the dog, and allowing their dog to be in that situation, is not a sign of a loving owner.

I've never personally owned a dog, and would never contemplate owning one that didn't obey my verbal commands instantly. Even then it doesn't guarantee it won't misbehave, in which case a muzzle is the only option. I wouldn't wish to use one on a pet, but it would not be a sign of a responsible and loving owner to put their preferences ahead of protecting their pet from the consequences of their behaviour.

But it wasn't the owner that bit her was it?
