I now drive a focus - Yesterday while trying to fill up for the first time - I noticed that no fuel cap was present . Help, have i misplaced the fuel cap already or doesn't have one - meaning my car fuel could be stolen or someone could shove something down my fuel tank. Never driven a car without a lockable fuel cap

  • I believe all facelift ford focus' have capless filling on their petrol fillers. Why they chose to remove the locking ability of the filler flap though I'll never know.

Here’s how it works: the spring-loaded flapper door is held closed by two latches that can only be released by a standard-size unleaded fuel nozzle. When the proper nozzle is inserted into the filler neck of the system, the latches release, and the nozzle pushes the spring-loaded flapper door to the open position. When the nozzle is removed, the flapper door is automatically forced closed by the spring.
The fuel filler pipe is then completely sealed, which prevents fuel vapour from escaping and helps reduce evaporative emissions.

‘Every time a fuel cap is either lost or not screwed on properly, that equates to evaporative emissions entering the environment,’ said Brian Aitken, a Ford fuel systems supervisor. ‘With Easy Fuel, these scenarios are no longer a problem.’
The new system also has a patented mis-fuelling inhibitor to reduce improper fuelling and siphoning.
The inhibitor consists of a fuel nozzle detector that guides the nozzle to the opening. If a nozzle or foreign tube of a different size - a diesel nozzle or plastic hose, for example - is placed in the filler neck of a gasoline-powered vehicle, the latches will not release. For a diesel-powered vehicle, the inhibitor will keep out the smaller gasoline nozzles.

Your fuel filler door should also lock with the rest of the central locking so I'm not sure why you'd worry

The chances are that there isn't any locking available for the filler door as this has been removed from some (maybe all) new focus models.

Ok will check whilst the central locking is on . Just seems strange even the Main door of fuel location doesnt lock either - who ever thought up this crap idea

Most newer cars have some sort of anti-syphon feature in the filler neck.

They aren't going to create a car without having precautions in place for this kind of thing. Check it out on google or with Ford. Wouldn't worry!
  • From MOT Testers' Manual.

"2. Check fuel tank cap /filler neck sealing device for presence, positive fit and condition of sealing washer and flange."

So "sealing device" seems to mean other than a "cap"?

This is true, was a feature on the pre-facelift, was removed when they started making the facelift version, I don't know what it is like on the Mk.3 Focus.

Most annoying thing about that filler. The fact that you can't insert a plastic hose means you'd can't fill up from a plastic can unless you wrap the end of the nozzle in gaffer tape, and that doesn't last as the glue gets dissolved by the diesel.

Yet another fix for something that didn't need fixing.
