Cost to get tow bar fitted?

I'm looking to buy a cycle carrier, and the ones that look the most secure are fitted to a tow bar. My car doesn't have one and I was wondering what sort of price I'd be charged to get one fitted. It's a Megane if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance.

Cost can also depend on where you are, which you don't state. I've got at least 4 companies that would supply & fit a tow bar within 10 minutes of where I live, so they should all be competitive on price.

Have you tried looking in the Yellow Pages and ringing round?

Thanks, I was just looking for a ballpark figure really - it's just going to add to the cost of the cycle rack. If it would cost around £50 or less then I'd really consider it, but over £100 then it's a definate no. I have no idea at all so was just looking for an estimate. I'm based in Tayside, Scotland.
Do they come in different "grades" for maybe pulling bigger trailers? ( I've zero experience with towing.) I just need one for the cycle rack.

Its the electrics which are often as expensive as the bar itself and more time consuming to fit. If the bikes will obstruct the number plate or rear lights you will need the electrics and a trailer lighting board

To try and answer the question - just had one fitted on a Mondeo, £150 (fitted) for the tow bar and £50 for the electrics.

Most towbars seem to be in the £80 to £110 range to purchase in a kit for self fit.
  • Thanks Pstuart. It's not a goer at the moment then. I'll look at a different kind of cycle rack for my car.

I was going to say about £150 (as above) but think about the added rear protection!

I had someone run into my one foot long towball last year, saved my bumper but I think it was then for her bumper and radiator.

Give these guys a ring and then a least you can confirm the price.

That depends on the car. Many cars have a plug and fit system at the rear, for tow bar electrics.

Surely her responsibility and not yours.

If you have reversing sensors fitted, be sure to get a removable hook.

Not quite correct, my guy tried the fixed ball (in simulation) together with a crash plate on the Mondeo estate and it didn't interfere with the sensors.

We've had the 'fixed' ball system on for some months now and its quite alright.

Its a 'suck it and see situation', not a firm no no.
