It staggers me that so many people still use the Train Line with its booking and credit cards fees.
Most train operators sell UK-wide tickets on their websites (Virgin, East Coast, South West, Northern, Merseyrail, First, etc.) without any booking fees at all. Some, such as Virgin and East Coast, offer loyalty schemes that can be used on tickets even when not travelling with that company, whilst South West makes regular appearances on Quidco.
And because they all use exactly the same booking system as Trainline, the prices are exactly the same (including the cheapest advance tickets). In fact, with East Midlands and East Coast, you get an extra percentage off their Advance tickets, making them CHEAPER that Trainline.
Why do people not realise this?!
Answers are marketing and a lack of public knowledge.
Someone buying a ticket at Stockport station for a journey to Sheffield goes to the ticket office and doesn't realise that they've bought the ticket off Virgin Trains, who run the ticket office there. If they look for tickets online they realise there are two different operators between Stockport and Sheffield so probably think if they go to the TransPennine Express website that they'll only be able to buy tickets for half of the services, not all of them. They don't realise that most operators will sell you 95% of the single and return tickets available for any operator.
The Trainline invest huge amounts in advertising so it's the only name that comes in to a lot of people's heads when they think about buying train tickets.
An example people can try is the following journey:
Bolton to Manchester Central Zone.
Outward travel 31/08/2011 at 18:30.
Return travel 31/08/2011 at 22:00.
The best return price you can get from The Trainline is £3.30 + £1 booking fee, so a total of £4.30
From Redspottedhanky the best return price is just £1.65 - a saving of 62%.0 -
I sat at my computer like a mug for 25 mins refreshing the MSE page every minute until the link became active; I then completed the RSH reg page and clicked on "Register".... and nothing happens. I've tried it in IE and Chrome with the same result. When I click the Register button, IE says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"; Chrome just reloads another blank form. This is really rather demeaning, making thousands of MSE-ers jump through hoops like lemmings. There has to be a better system - MSE please take note!
Do you think that maybe, this is a bit of an over - reaction?
Surely this was just a case of the RSH site just being heavily subscribed.
We should all be grateful for MSE letting us know of the offer!
Peace
Thanks MSE!0 -
Got my evoucher too. I think some people are expecting to see 1,000 loyalty points and when the balance says 0 think they have missed out.0

On the left hand side there is a tab "evoucher" just above loyalty points. There is a code in there that I assume you use at the checkout.0 -
