I've had nets and curtains for many many years and it wasn't until I finally persuaded OH that blinds would look nice and I took the whole load of dust traps down from the windows I then realised how dark the house had been and how much light I can now let in if I want to... if its hot and the sun is shining in I just adjust the blinds to what I want its just so much nicer ... oh and I have the wooden venetian blinds not the coloured ones..

planning to get vertical blinds in our dining room. Reason is that we have patio doors, and don't really have space for curtains to be mounted outside the recess, so vertical blinds inside the recess will work nicely. may keep an option to mount curtain poles for winter months though as it's in the extension and gets a bit chilly in the evening. Would have to go for brightly coloured ones to avoid it looking like my work office ;)

Ive got vertical blinds on all windows and curtains, but I never use the curtains just use the blinds..............you can let so much light in with blinds or not...............I absolutely detest net curtains they make the rooms so dark, and they soon look old and grey .............there okay if you want to stand behind them and watch the neighbours...

I disagree. There's something called 'washing' that keeps nets clean and white. LOL.

Also, they stop people peering into your property during the day - something that's difficult to achieve with blinds.

Nets will come back into fashion, mark my word! Blinds are just a passing fad for people to make their homes look like offices.

You'd actually be very surprised how little you can see into a house that has blinds my neighbours have blinds and from the street you cannot see anything inside the house.. When do people peer into a property? Thieves already know most houses have stuff worth stealing they don't need to look.. so it makes no difference to have nets. Next time you take down your nets to wash them go out onto the street and look back at your house and see how little you can see inside the house and then go back inside and see how light the house is without the nets. But each to his own ;)

  • Personally, I'd rather have venetian blinds than vertical. They do collect a lot of dust though!

Why? (Genuine interest, not argument.) All the houses near me have vertical blinds, and I'm thinking about blinds for the sitting room.

  • I just prefer the look of venetian blinds. Less 'officey' than vertical ones. We had the vertical ones for the patio windows in a previous house though, and they seemed OK.
    I s'pose it's just a personal choice thing.
My friend has those wooden shutters. Lovely, but expensive!
