Wrong. If you actually read that, it says fitted to a vehicle first used on or after 1 August 1973,0 -
Pull one of the air hoses, send for MOT, reconnect air hose..... "Simples"“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

This is perhaps why it has passed on previous years:e. fitted to a vehicle first used on or after 1 August 1973, emits a sound which is:
· not a continuous or uniform note
· harsh or gratingThe greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
I had a pair of those twin air horns on my old Passat to replace the real horn which had turned into a discuss shaped blob of rust. Cost me 15 quid, cheaper than a scrapyard horn. Never had a problem with it at MOT time and it was much louder than the proper horn from VW.
Only time it ever caused a problem was when I sounded it at a taxi driver who was trying to change lanes into my front wing. Startled them so much they swerved the other way and drove into one of those plastic bollards.0 -
Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm totally confused now! :rotfl:
It was registered and first used in 1972, and is tax exempt. Like I said before, it's been through 4 MOTs without it being mentioned.
It sounds like this: http://www.classic-car-accessories.co.uk/acatalog/soundtklaxonred.html
It's definitely louder than the original horn which was pretty pathetic.
We can reconnect the original horn to get it though, but would rather not have to do that each year if we don't have to!"If you can dream it, you can do it". Walt Disney0 -
My guess is that the test was carried out by an inexperienced examiner (or at least one with the relevant experience), go back to the MOT test station and discuss it with them. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

Seconded. Last year the MOT tester tried to put my wife's FTO through the post 8/95 emissions test even though the date of first use as 2/95 which we proved by showing him the V5 meaning it should have had the pre 8/95 test. After about an hour of arguing the point, he phoned VOSA who told him I was right.
This year, the same person tested it and we didn't have the problem.
They aren't used to MOTing old cars. I've seen them do emissions tests on pre 1970 cars when all it is is a visual smoke test.0
