MOT query - horn
We have a 1972 VW bay camper van. We've had it for 5 years now, and in the first year we fitted an air horn rather than the standard horn.
My husband was under the impression that this was allowed for vehicles over a certain age. It's also been through MOT and passed 4 times since it's been fitted.
Today however, they have failed the MOT on the basis that the horn has two tones and it should have one. (It's a klaxon horn).
Is that the case that the air horn is illegal then? It's not been mentioned before, even in the advice sheet.
Thanks in advance!

2 tone horn = fail.0

Any horn with more than one tone should be an automatic fail regardless of the age of the vehicle.
The only age stipulation is for vehicles made before 1906 and these can have a bell or gong.0 -
So long as it's not a sequential multi-tone horn you should be OK. I believe you can appeal and they have to respond pretty quickly. Worth asking at a different MOT centre if it would fail on that and/or asking the centre that did the test where in the official rulings it says a two-tone horn will fail. They could just have mis-interpreted the guidelines - or could be thinking it's a little extra earner for them!

It's clearly stated that any horn that gives more than one tone is a failure. (Section 2.d)

There's a whole pile of new cars that have more than one horn, they work at the same time and give one continuous tone.0

From that link:d. has more than one tone Note: When operated, a two or more tone horn automatically produces a sound which alternates at regular intervals between fixed notes
