Would anyone of you eat things that have been frozen but past their 'best before'? How old would something have to be before you would give up and ditch it? I have a box of veggie burgers, unopened with a best before date of March 2009. Also, what about tins of stuff that has best before dates in 2008 and 2009?

I usually take stuff for the freezer out of its packaging and freeze in usable portions, so I generally have no idea what the use by date is anyway by the time I come to eat it. As newlywed says, frozen stuff can't go off, just lose its texture a bit (I find meat and fish are particularly prone to this after a year or so), so I don't think there'll be any harm in eating your stuff from the last couple of years.

From my own leftovers, I've done half a tub of sour cream leftover from Tuesday's stroganoff, plus some rather soggy whoopsied mushrooms, plus some stock from the cupboard = mushroom soup. That's lunch for the next couple of days sorted out, anyway! :D

  • I was hoping someone could give me some recipe inspiration. I'm going to make an italian meal tonight. I have found a recipe for garlic dough balls which I'm going to make to accompany the main course, I just don't know what the main course is going to be! I'm trying to use up leftovers and what I have in the store cupboard. I have the following :-

    Red,Green and Yellow peppers
    Parmesan
    Pancetta
    Cheese
    Tinned Tomatos
    Garlic
    Olive Oil
    Tonnes of pasta
    Oregano and mixed italian herbs
    Milk
    Lasagne Sheets
    Courgette
    Mushrooms
Onions ( Red and white )
    Potatos
    Mince

Could anyone help?? I know there's an italian meal in there somewhere! The obvious one is bolognese but I wanted to do something different, perhaps not using the mince for a change??

    Thanks :D

How about a roast veggie lasagne? It's gorgeous - one of the few veggie meals I really like, as opposed to eating because I know it's good for me! :o

Home made pizza any good for you?

  • I had home made pizza for tea last night, plus with having the garlic dough balls don't want to have too much bread.

Found a pack of meatballs in the freezer so I think I'm going to do meatballs with spaghetti and use the pancetta to make a nice tomato sauce :)

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Any ideas what to do with quite a bit of double cream that I have left over?

is it frozen or still fresh, you can whip it and then freeze dollops (or roses if you like to pipe).

or put some in a soup, or curry, or quiche...

i've been looking in the discounted bit for cream for weeks and there hasn't been any, (or what was had 10% off and i want it at least half price!) but when i find some it will go in the homemade soups and curries, and maybe make a lemon tart or lemon possett for a pud for treat..

Thanks Poppy-glos! I never knew that you could freeze cream!

I'm also trying to find out about how you freeze bananas as I got loads yesterday at the local market as they were packing up - do you freeze them with the skins on or off? Can you then eat them as normal after they have derosted or are they then only good for banana cake etc?

Also, got a load of tomatoes - can these be frozen? Sorry for all the questions!

Redcurrant sauce (and probably cranberry too) is great for adding some zing to casseroles / gravies. I particularly use it in sausage casseroles or for a simmered down tomato-based sauce with homemade meatballs. Lovely as a baste on sausages too!
