lol! that links got a mind of its own
£100 - £10,0000 -
So, in conclusion.
It's now the middle of August and the OP wants somewhere sunny ( which means long haul ) for two weeks over Christmas and New Year and the budget is 2k ?
I would say double this and factor in another grand in incidentals and walking around money.
Realistically, unless you want to risk the Canaries where the weather in December is very unpredictable you're wasting your time trying to plan this.0 -
Hubby and I need a bit of a pick me up and something to look forward to. Any suggestions for somewhere to go to over Christmas for two weeks for just the two of us? We don't want to go to Egypt or Tunisia but would love to go to Hawaii but I know that can be very expensive.
So does anyone have any suggestions?
How hot is 'hot'?
Canary Islands are always warm and classic islands for all year sun (mostly).
Otherwise I'd recommend Cuba, hot in more ways than one:rotfl:Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -
If you really do need to stay on budget and would consider something more adventurous how about Kerala in India?
Looking up flights on skyscanner you would pay about £630 return, after searching around and talking to agents could knock that down to £600.
There are some beautiful beaches in kerala and you could also stay on a houseboat and travel along some of the backwaters. Spending £300 each on hotel, travel and food you could stay in some very nice places.
I was in Kerala in January and spent £100 a week on a more budget-mid range basis but had to pay for a room rate so covering 2 people.
There are also hill stations and wildlife reserves or just chill out on the beaches.
I guess am suggesting this as it could be within budget and there is definite sun there.... oh it was so nice!0 -
Oops meant to say £400 each, but you could spend more than that if you wanted.
I can't cut and paste for a strange reason on my laptop but if you google Deshadan resorts and hotels they have different hotels in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. They are very nice. I stayed in the deshadan resort in Varkala, the website price for a pool room is about £53 a night which is massively expensive in India.
I walked in fed up with more grimy places and they accepted me paying £20 a night for the same room, so you can bargain. Don't think they would do that months in advance however. That place is not directly on the beach though and Varkala is quite a busy touristy place and you walk down a lot of steps to the beach or along about 10-15 minutes to a quieter and wilder section of beach.
When I say grimy places I was staying in rooms for £3-5 a night, which were fine just not always cleaned that well. Did stay in a nice hut on the beach looking right onto the sea for £4 though.
I'm sure with a bit of research you could find places on or near to the beach that would be nice and within budget.0 -
Would Cuba be a possibility?
I went to Cuba over Christmas a few years ago, it wasn't warm, if I remember correctly there was only about 6 hours sunshine and the first 2 hours and last 2 hours it wasn't warm enough to lie out unless you had a T-Shirt on. Maybe we were unlucky.
In addition although I loved Havana and would go back in a flash the beach resort(Varadero) was deathly quiet. There was only us and 3 other couples in our massive AI hotel and the other hotels looked the same, we wondered whether some were even open. I just don't think it's a place people go to for Christmas, too far for most Europeans that time of year maybe and Americans aren't allowed.Debt at 1/5/09 £21,996 _pale_

Even India charges premium rates at Christmas and New Year as lots of Indians go on holiday at this time. Would check the prices for this time of year for accommodation.0 -

What about Dubai or a caribbean cruise?
We were in Dubai last New Year and it was amazing! Flights were about £600pp.
We've also cruised the caribbean at Christmas and New Year - Barbados, St Kitts, Grenada, Aruba etc - wake up each day at a new island. Fab! And there are some great deals around at the moment. Contact a travel agent/cruise company give them your dates/budget and get them to do the work for you, then look at booking direct.0 -
Thank you all so much for your posts. After some extensive surfing last night I can see that my budget isn't really going to get us very far! So I guess we'll just have to up it and have a hunt around, taking on board your comments and suggestions or wait and hope that we get something last minute. I have to say I'm not a gambling person though and would like to try and book something, so I'll keep looking and also call up a couple of travel agents and see what they suggest.
Thanks again! :T0
