mondeo DMF is a bit of a crux to these cars, there are alternate option available to those whose mondeo with the DMF (dual mass flywheel) has expired is to revert the dual mass back to solid flywheel eliminating the DMF prem failures if your car is out of warranty etc.
this option is a recommendation, saving you :money: in the long term.
but as their becoming more popular some suppliers are having trouble getting them into the factors and trader hands due to shortage but supply should be back by the end of the next working week but being in the factors trade in the past, they can have a large amount one min and next they will take 2-3 weeks to re distrabute back into the publics hands, as was and still is with the rover 75 solid conversion kit for the diesels.
shop around for these solid flywheel convertion kits some manufacturers have become dearer than the dual mass kit :mad:
and as there is a demand if you believe your DMF is kicking the bucket common symptom is a violently vibrating/shaking gear stick whilst in gear and accelleration dont leave it, have it checked and get the kit ordered because if a garage strips it, and theres a shortage you could suffer a waiting time to have your car back, there are four people in this situ that i know of, and friday will be the very earliest the garages affected will see the kit arrive to their doors after an already 7 day wait.

The solid conversion is only really worhtwhile if you plan to keep the car for a lot of years to come.0

My MK3 Mondeo TDCi is on 157,000 miles on the original clutch and flywheel. If you don't use it for lots of short start stop around town journeys and drive sensibly, it won't fail as quick as some manage to.0

Unless you are keeping the car for a long time and will do over 150,000 miles or you abuse the clutch then its not really money saving.
Some people have had the conversion and been happy others have had the DMF refitted after getting vibration or poor clutch action problems.

i doubt the box failing is due to a solid flywheel as the primary reason for DMF is for driver comfort,it is designed to reduce vibration on taking up drive and not to prolong the life of other components.
did these diesels kill gearbox's prior to the DMF? my vw has got a DMF but it is not that long ago that they were once sold with solid mass bolted to the PD engine and never had any problems.
personally i would go for whatever is cheaper if mine failed currently the SMF just edges it by about £100 but the gap used to be considerably more.0 -

or intend on doing alot of mileage wich in some area's for taxi services with a fleet of out of warrnaty tdci's the solid flywheel has become the option to fit.

unfotunately driving it carefully doesnt factor into it in some areas like mine, where steep hills, stop start traffic, road works, traffic calming speed humps,traffic lights and juntions are bunched together, in these scenarios your on the clutch more than off it, especially in towns and cities.
but i'll keep my ear to the ground on this gearbox going bang after SMF kits fitted, and i'll update if i hear anything.0 -
The father in law has my old 55 plate tdci mondeo.
Probably just shy of 50k (FSH), it's had rear discs and pads in all the time I/he's had it.
I leathered it, he doesnt use it much. No DMF symptoms so far.0 -

So what you're saying is that if you use a diesel Mondeo as a motorway mile muncher, their intended purpose, then they don't suffer from premature failure, but if you're a muppet who paid a premium for a diesel, because OMG 20mpg more than the petrol!, and only ever drives it around town, it will fail prematurely and wipe out all your savings and then some?

That said, DMFs are the spawn of satan. Look up that video on youtube that shows how they work. Anyone who has even heard the words "tempering" or "metal fatigue" should think very carefully about buying a car with one of these things fitted.0 -

Exactly that. Some vehicles suffer incredible vibration after a flywheel swap, in fact I'd go so far as to say "outright shaking" rather than "vibration".
