Holyhead to Dublin by Ferry

Can anyone give me advice, we are going to a caravan in Anglesey next week and wanted to take family over to Dublin by Ferry for the first time (2 adults & 2 kids ages 9 & 10) I priced it up to go around 10am on Wednesday 24th and a 9.15pm Ferry back and it quoted £180! Surely there is a cheaper way to spend the day in Dublin, we can go any day next week, but we can't stay the night because we are leaving our dog with a neighbour at the caravan caravan site. Also what is the best thing to visit with kids ages 9 & 10 years, we want to do the tour bus and maybe visit the cells. any advise please?

We've stayed in Snowdonia a couple of times and gone on a day trip to Dublin. Each time we've taken the car. If you go as a foot passenger, Dun Laoghaire train station is right by the docks with trains to Dublin city centre. We went on the HSS service in both directions. The man without a signature.0

Yes, we've gone from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire as foot passengers and got the DART train in to the centre of Dublin for the day and then back in the past - it's very easily doable and I think works out cheaper than going direct to Dublin.0

Brilliant advice, thank you all so much.0
