One thing to add about the v9 map update is free if you "say" you bought the i3 after Sep 06 and haven't registered it before.

The v9 upgrade DVD includes full european mapping for free! You just need to buy a larger micro SD (transflash) card to put them on. A 1GB will get all Europe on. I got France on a 256MB one and swap it in and out with the UK one.

If your keen on getting a satnav for £100 but want a touch screen have a look at this one:

    Excellent for the money.

It SEEMS the Garmin i3 map v9 update is only free IF you registered your i3 as purchased after 1 Sep 06.

They apparently send out the v9 disc for free, but you need an unlock code to actually unlock/install the map(s) - which it appears will be chargeable if your i3 was registered as bought pre 1 Sep 06.

Got mine back in June so waiting for disc to arrive before trying. (Discs have only just arrived with some owners and not clear yet what is/isn't working from online reports I've seen.)

As feared - no update as made the mistake of being a good customer and REGISTERING this product on their website.

So bought this just 7 months ago now (and 3 months before eligibility to update) and it already starts up every time saying maps over 12m old and out of date and have to pay the same update cost for this small/cheapo/modest SatNav as the top of range users - just NOT cricket really!

So a clear MORAL for Garmin customers = only register the product if/when you have to to get CURRENT maps or to get a repair.

Thansk for reminding me, dont use mine much mainly in Summer montsh with kids. Updated i3 and as I hadnt registered last year I rang them up as I lost a number that came with it, happen to ask how much maps are, and they giving me one for FREE as I hadnt registered before

Sorry poster above had no luck didnt want to rub it in, I would be annoyed if I was you too.

i would go with the garmin i3 for that price you wont be disapponted. As mentioned it does have a small screen and fiddly to get used to at first but once you start using it you get used to it.
  • I still prefer the Garmin 2610 which I paid over £600 2 yrs ago & now you can bag them for under £170 & get the latest maps with the V9 update

Thankyou - I think the latter look a bit complicated for my *simple* needs, think I will opt for the i3 as I don't seem to be able to find anything cheaper!

Does anyone know any discount codes for motor world? (i know you're not allowed to post them here but if anyone knows if they do them, that would be a help)

This sounds too good to be true - does this really mean that I can buy the i3 (with UK maps only) today for £99 then register and get a DVD containing all European maps for free?

Are all maps unlocked and ready to use, or is an unlock code required (at extra cost) to get access to them?

Would appreciate some clarification on this, as am urgently looking for a ceap Satnav which I can use in France and the UK. Don't mind having to swap memory cards or get a bigger one, but don't want to pay for mapping on a country by country basis.

    Thanks a lot, Rob
