Garmin Streetpilot i3 £100

Options
I used to own one of these untill it got stolen and they are excellent. Lots off folk seem to be put of by the small screen, think it is becuase they cant show off as they navigate the usual route to work. Tad bit fiddly to input your address/postcode at first but I soon got used to it. I never had any problems with mine it just worked, no signal problems, no lock ups, qiuck recalculate if you miss a turn. Things I liked about it was its small size, and as I drive a truck you can turn the volume up loud and still hear the directions. At the moment I got a pda based sat nav but am going out this morning and buying one of these, this time I will be more carefull with it!!!!!

OK, I know it's £40 more (although there is Quidco cashback and delivery is free) but Savastore have the IMO far better StreetPilot C320 (complete with European maps!) for £139.94. This is on sale at up to £450 elesewhere on the net!

Works out at £134-ish delivered with Quidco cashback.
  • Saw the c320, gets some very mixed reviews and not really interested in european maps, if you got a pda you can get european street level mapping very cheaply. Went and bought the i3 this morning purely for work purposes, just in the process of putting speed camera pois on it now.

I've got a Garmin i3, and I use it in preference to my TomTom One ! Remember to apply for your FREE upgrade to version 9 maps from the Garmin website. I've flashed mine at revision 2.82 beta which seems to work best. They'd be even better if they have the SirfIII chipset, but the SirfII chipset is fine as long as you have a normal car windscreen.

My mate recently got an ex-display Gamin at Staples for £59.91 ! Was on the shelf at £69.91 but he used a £10 voucher in store. There might just be some still out there at Staples for £69.91 ?? (None in Leicester, Nottingham or Derby unless there has been customer return).

I've just removed some of the speed camra types, to stop my i3 from 'bonging' all the time on long journeys up north. Not much use for SPECs if they continue for mile after mile. Also no use for mobile vans that are not there 999 out of 1000 - especially at night when they are really never going to be there ! Especially bad if the (non-existent) speed camera warning over-rides the traffic directions at a crticical point of your journey !!

So I just load the Gatzos and the Red-Light databases for now, as these are usually there about 50% of the time... YMMV

Have you got the link for the free upgrade ? I got one but it says the maps are out of date and I can't find the free upgrade on their site.

    TIA

I've got one of these models and its FAB - had no idea I could update or put speed cameras on - please explain how (or I would have to get the instructions out and read them - being a chap thats the last thing I'd do).

Had not realised you could do such updates sounds even better - are they free??
  • You will need a POI loader (Free download) and £2 to download the speed camera data base, you will find most of the info on the page in the link below.

Go to https://www.garmin.com to update your reciever, just follow simple links.

It SEEMS the Garmin i3 map v9 update is only free IF you registered your i3 as purchased after 1 Sep 06.

They apparently send out the v9 disc for free, but you need an unlock code to actually unlock/install the map(s) - which it appears will be chargeable if your i3 was registered as bought pre 1 Sep 06.

Got mine back in June so waiting for disc to arrive before trying. (Discs have only just arrived with some owners and not clear yet what is/isn't working from online reports I've seen.)
  • I've just bought one of these little beauties (literally, an hour ago!). Very few instructions, but it seems easy to set up and use. Does anyone have any tips or advice to give to a blonde semi-technophobe?!

The forums on this site (below) are very useful for extra info, there is a section for the Garmin Streetpilot (I3) as mentioned in earlier posts.
