Can retailers over label products wih higher prices?

Hi, I recently went into a local well known home and fashion store to buy a duvet cover. I found the one I wanted but noticed that the price had been over-labelled with a new higher price, leaving the older lower price on the cardboard of the product, can retailers do this? I thought they couldn't but cant find the info I need, anyone know? The retailer had done this to a number of items in the shop.

Many thanks.

Yes they can. What makes you think they can't?
  • Only because the product has two prices, the cheaper one has been over-labelled with the new higher price. Maybe I'm wrong?!

Yes, they can charge any amount they want.

Although we all know shops increase prices I wouldnt say its great practise to advertise to your customers that it used to be a lower price though!
  • They can do this - the product doesn't have two prices, it had one price and now it has a new price.

The fact that one was printed on the packaging and the new one is on a sticky label doesn't make a difference provided the current price of the product is clearly labelled.

Not only can they put a new price tag over the old one but if you remove the more expensive label you are commiting a crime.

I always thought that if a price was pre-printed on a product, they had to abide by that. At my local shop they charge more for cigarettes, but always honour the price if it's on the packaging
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

They have to abide by the price displayed to the consumer - if they have obscured the printed on price so that it isn't visible then they can replace the printed price with one of their own.

Sometimes a price is printed on by the supplier with the intention that it be sold at that price (ie as an offer to get new customers buying a product or to increase volume of turnover). That sort of thing is part of the relationship between the supplier and the retailer and not relevant to the consumer (the same as items that say 'this item is part of a multi pack, not for individual sale').

They need more practice at taking old labels off!

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

I'm pretty sure they don't even have to do that. The advertised price is seen as an 'invitation to purchase'. Every now and again you get a retailer who has advertised a product at a really low price by mistake, usually online, and they rarely honour that price.
