Not true actually graham, open fires are much gentler on the flueway as the heat takes away the flue gases and there is less chance of the resin deposits building up and catching fire or blocking the flue. A badly fitted stove is of course more dangerous. But as I said, its an individuals choice and the worse case scenario.

If you want to take the chance its up to you.

Yes, I know I can 'take my chances', but since I drive a car, I'd say my risk of sitting in front of my fire is relatively miniscule compared to other risks everyone almost continually accepts day after day.

But I digress. The statement of mine which you have simply asserted as incorrect is that the danger of co poisoning from an open fire is less dangerous than from a working stove. Do you have any statistics, or anything else, to back up your assertion, or is it simply your opinion based on possibly skewed data?

All I've found is that there were 30 confirmed co deaths last year, and the article was about urging chimneys to be swept frequently for open fires. (About 2000 killed on the roads btw).

But perception of risk is really skew wiff, as Prof Nutt and all those parents who quite readily put their kid on a horse yet are extremely concerned about other things with miniscule risk, illustrate.

Graham, when you drive a car you are open to unknown and unexpected events which can cause accidents - I assume you wouldnt drive wearing a blindfold or with faulty steering. You are able to take precautions to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning at very little cost - why are you arguing against those precautions? Its ridiculous. If you want to go without the simple precautions thats up to you, but dont encourage others to. (And if you are putting in an illegal 90 degree bend, then I think a monitor is all the more necessary in your property)

Good luck rainybird - hope it all goes well for you and glad you are getting a CO monitor, make sure its a sealed one - hang on, Ill find some details for you re diy installation.
