Just got a new laptop
What do I need to install security wise?
Is it really possible to cover yourself for free?
After reading different articles I am totally confused
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks

Either of these are worth considering

Also, in addition to one of the above

Provided you're running Windows, Microsoft Security Essentials is free and pretty good.
I've also used Avira free edition in the past.
I'd recommend both but I mainly use Security Essentials now.0 -
Yes you can protect yourself for free. Read some of the stickies in this forum if you can take a bit more!
Lots of people will recommend lots of different things. It can also depend on what you intend to use the computer for. If you go with popular opinion on here you probably won't go too far wrong.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Avast and NOD32 are good but they're not free.0

Erm! Avast is free.
I also recommend Kaspersky which can be bought from Amazon for a reasonable price, I know lots of people use free AV's, but then if you pay several hundred pounds for a computer or laptop I don't mind a few extra pounds a year for a good comprehensive AV.0 -

Avast is free, see above.
Avira and MSE also mentioned above are also worth considering.0 -
I run Avast (free version) alongside Spybot SD (which runs in the background) and a Sandbox programme, which I open up any updates in before installing them after scanning.0
