Her friend just rang and said that as she is covered for up to £3000 for the contents of her room she will try to get something back for my daughter if possible. She said she could say she had a tom tom or a camera in her room. I dont think she would be able to claim towards the laptop or hardrive as she will prob be claiming for them herself but its nice of her to think of her and offer to help if she can. Wouldnt they ask for receipts or anything for the items though? the tom tom and camera were both bought in my name as presents we arent holding out too much hope though just in case its not possible
    Thanx

She could, at the risk of having ALL of her own insurance claims rejected for making an exaggerated claim.

Is storing stuff in places like google ok for the future?

If so do we have to be referred to get an account?

Simplest way is to burn everything to dvd and keep it somewhere safe/out of sight.

Some insurance companies use voice stress analysers and if they are dubious about the claim will dig into it and start asking for receipts etc. What she is suggesting doing is fraud and insurance companies don't look favourably on it.

    Thanx for the advice everyone

A little good knews is that they actually left the hardrive behind possibly because she left all the cables to it at home and everything is backed up on there so that is a big relief for her.

As for her friend offering to help I know she was just trying to be kind and soften the blow a little for my daughter. She is going to try and get as much bank nurse work in as possible around uni and placements to get the money together for a new laptop and I will help her as much as I can towards it aswell as without one she cannot do her work, thats the main concern. The camera is the least important and hopefully in time we will try to replace the tom tom too as it helps when shes getting to different placements
    Thanx

Better hide it well, in case they come back..

DVD's or external offsite backup is better than a hard disk for backup, apart from the risk of theft, all it takes is a virus or hard disk crash, and your backup has gone.

Web hosting with 5GB of storage can be had for £20 a year at GoDaddy, could be a viable option for uploading those crucial data backups.

Alternatively, 4GB USB pen drives are available for about £26 at the moment. Flash memory is extremely reliable and the drive could be put on a set of keys etc (or well hidden from theives anyway since they are pretty small).

Personally for backups, I'd suggest backing everything up to DVD and leaving them at your house.

Even though it will cost she really ought to have insurance, she may be able to save a bit by going through Quidco. Some of the insurance companies offer massive cashback offers. For instance Barclays are currently offering £125 cashback and Lloyds TSB are offering £120. It's normally better to get combined buildings and contents but with those sort of cashbacks it may work out cheaper to get separate.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
