Orange rip-off

Hi all.
I'm in a contract with Orange due to finish in March 2013... I'm paying roughly £40 per month which seems incredibly high considering I use nowhere near my text or minute allowance. Yes i did agree to this (prior to my money-saving conversion) and got an upgraded phone (which I promptly dropped down the toilet, now back to my old one...)
I phoned Orange to see if they'd be able to lower my tariff, to which they originally agreed and said that they'd half my monthly bill. However, when the next payment was taken it was still £40 and when I spoke to Orange again, they said that until I was at least 12 months into my new contract, nothing could be done. Even then they would only reduce it by £5.
Help! Is there any way I can get out of this massive waste of money? It feels like I've (literally) flushed a grand down the bog...
I do pay insurance every quarter which (as far as I can tell) I still have but I'm sure there's a clause against water damage and in any case, I'm happy with my old crappy phone.
Any ideas? Muchos gracias in advance

No ideas and no way I'm afraid.
You can try offering your contract for a reduced price to your friends.
What's the point in keeping to pay insurance primiums for your "old crappy phone"? I think it doesn't even cover it if you have not informed the insurer about changing the handset.0 -
You made a commitment in March this year. You now feel it was a bad deal. But a contract is a contract and you were obviously happy enough with it or you wouldn't have gone with it. You are stuck with it and if Orange do allow you to reduce by £5 after 12 months, then they are doing you a favour.
That's why I recommend sim-only contracts.0 -
orange should cover water damage, their policy is one of the bestDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Unfortunately the insurance is with Carphone Warehouse. I take it that if I claimed, my premium would increase?
Ah well, lesson learned! Thanks anywho0 -
Why is it a rip-off? You agreed to it, after all.0

I agree. You only now deem it a rip-off as things have not gone your way.I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0

Liquid damage is covered by Carphone. Oh and your premiums would not go up.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).

Why is it that people who go into an expensive contract through their own choice then turn round and accuse the provider of "ripping them off" as soon as THEY want to renege on the contract for reasons they should have seen before they put pen to paper??
Orange is NOT ripping you off, this is a situation of your own making and you will be able to take advantage of Orange's offer to downgrade at the appropriate time during the contract. It is not their doing or problem - people have to accept responsibility for themselves and not accuse others of (basically) not doing it for them.
My own lack of sympathy is compounded by the totally unfounded heading of the thread.0 -
