Tungsten light bulbs

Can someone please tell me if I bulk buy the tungsten light bulbs (60 watts), is there a sort of use by date? Or can I keep it forever and it will still work in years time?

I suffer from migrain and I cannot use flourescent/life saving lights (containing mercury). Thanks to EU, old fashined light bulbs are BANNED and they completely ignored about migrain sufferers and environmental effect these new energy saving lights would cause.

I don't know how many I have to buy to stockpile to last for rest of my life

They will keep forever, the only thing to watch out for is bashing the boxes, which may either break the glass, or the filament

They will outlast you if unused

Oh, that's great. It will sit quietly in my cupboard so they should be ok then. Now, I need to calculate how many I need to buy...:D

You can buy 240v halogen bulbs instead. Tesco/ASDA and I presume everywhere else has them with same fittings and shapes as tungsten bulbs. They use 20-25%% less energy than tungsten equivelent but give off same light/brightness instantly and best bit for you they don't have a flicker as they operate at mains frequency without the power converter that CFLs (flourescent) have. Its the power converter that changes the flicker/frequency of CFLs which is causing you migraines.

To get a halogen with same brightness at 60w tungsten your looking for a 45-48w.

Also halogen bulbs are not getting banned (yet)

EDIT: You can also buy 100w equivelent

The halogen bulbs also last twice as long, which would save space if you have to store some for the future.

I shouldn't splash out too much, Hannah. In a few years, CFLs will be phased out and replaced by LED versions, which will last even longer, have no flicker, no mercury and start immediately.

The LED bulbs we've tried give off an even worse light than the CFLs. The halogen bulbs are fine though.

Yes you certainly can, they're the ones we use

Can't stand the other "energy saving" ones, although we do have a few in certain light fittings. Only until they fail though, hate having to make an appointment to use the room By the time they'd be at full brightness, I'd have already left *rolls eyes*

That's why I said 'in a few years'. There are beginning to be developed LED bulbs that will replace 60W incandescent bulbs, but I think they presently cost £20-30. The ones that are on the market at the moment seem mainly to be the 'mini spotlight' type.

LED Bulbs contain no mercury !
