The LED bulbs we've tried give off an even worse light than the CFLs. The halogen bulbs are fine though.

You are clearly using the wrong LED Bulbs. :)

You can see form these images how good LED bulbs can be. The 7w LED below is not cheap, but it is the best LED Spot in the world, will last for 20 odd years, provides a better light than a 50w Halogen and if bought from the right retailer, you get a 5 year guarantee

That's why I said 'in a few years'. There are beginning to be developed LED bulbs that will replace 60W incandescent bulbs, but I think they presently cost £20-30. The ones that are on the market at the moment seem mainly to be the 'mini spotlight' type.

    Not in a few years, now. I sell products that replace 60w + 40w incandescent B22 + E27 bulbs and 35w and 50w GU10 + MR16 Halogen Bulbs.

The majority of LED's in the market are sub-standard and fail to deliver any of the things they claims it does.

Be very careful when buying LED products, buy quality products from a quality retailer only. :)

Hi Elstimpo, could you give any advice on which LED bulbs are good replacements for 60 watt bayonet bulbs? I considering buying one, but the high cost keeps making me question if it's a good idea.

do the energy saving bulbs make depression worse?
Well they certainly make me feel depressed. There's an unnatural coldness to the light as well as being dim.

After a visit to the hardware shop I discovered that not all filament bulbs are being banned. Frosted ones are no longer being made and are hard to find in shops, but clear ones are subject to different regulations and as far as I can tell there are no imminent plans to ban clear filament bulbs that are rated energy class C or better. The clear bulbs that meet class C are currently only the halogen bulbs, which are available in many shapes and wattages to replace your regular bulbs. Philips make clear 42w bulbs that I use in place of 60w bulbs and they do meet class C energy standards so I have no reason to believe they will stop selling them any time soon.

Exactly why you can buy a class C clear bulb but not a class C frosted bulb is a mystery, but this is apparently the situation.

Energy saving bulbs are the root of all evil. We can thank the looney liberal left tree-hugging lentil-munchers for ruining our lives with these abominations. Bring back the 100W and 150W proper bulbs.

    Looks rubbish, mate.

    Very dark, spooky and unnatural.

Nothing like a proper filament bulb from the good, old days.

Energy savers have their uses and some of them provide excellent light (philips softone are very good replacements for frosted 60w bulbs). I just like being able to choose what bulbs I want to use myself because they have specific limitations. Dimmer switches being the major thing energy savers just don't work with. Standard on/off energy savers are pretty good in general, but the dimmable ones aren't good in my experience so I don't use them.
