My biggest piece of advice would be to go and google-image wedding invites. From there get an idea about what sort of invite you'd like (eg single sheet of paper, folded card) the design (modern, floral, traditional), the wording (traditional, modern) and have a think about your colour scheme. This is how I started creating our wedding invites. Then come back on here, share it with us and we can help with how to make them

These are our prototype invites, were very simple to make. OH even managed and he is not crafty AT ALL! I think if you want them very simple they are easy to make, and as long as you use good quality card they look really posh and expensive. (I hope!) they cost about £1 each, and that is including envelopes n RSVP cards too. Very MSE! :j:T0 -
MrsDrink - I will have a look on google thanks x
johannalf88 - They are fab very impressive!
My colour scheme is black, white, and purple (cadbury) Not really sure what type i want yet but i like simple elegant styles that can be added to with embellishments/ribbon etc0 -

Glued some white card onto some burgundy card, cut them to size and scored them so they folded as a gatefold with the white on the outside and the burgundy on the inside. Created the design in word (using oodles of textboxes), printed them out on white card and glued them into the middle on the inside. (Hope that makes sense!) Then tied a burgundy ribbon bow around them

I made my friends' invitations as my wedding present to them. I didn't even intend for them to be quite this cheap, but I did 30 day and 30 evening invites for £30 (50p each!), and my friend was chuffed to bits with them!:)
I was lucky enough to know someone with a card for a wholesalers, so I went there and bought 50 plain black cards and envelopes for £6. I cut half of the cards in half to make the evening invitations (my friend had asked for there to be marked differences between the day and evening invitations, so I made the day ones proper cards with an image on the front that opened to reveal the wording, and the evening ones were just single sided with the same image featured below the wording).
I also bought ribbon (ridiculously cheaply compared to John Lewis or habidashers) and tiny stick-on bow ties for decoration, and 5mm deep foam pads for affixing different coloured inserts and adding depth (for the image on the front and the writing inside).
I then went to a stationers who allowed you to fill a plastic wallet with as much card as you could for £3, and bought enough red and cream card to affix to the fronts and insides of the invitations for pictures and writing to be printed onto.
I found an image myself (friends had very few ideas what style etc they wanted), typed up the wording my friends had selected and did all my printing at work. Spent a couple of evenings putting the various bits together and hey presto!
It's actually taken my friend longer to write and send them than it did me to make them!:D
It's really easy and definitely something I'd look to do for my own wedding, as it saves so much and looks as good (if not better) than shop-bought ones. As my friends are gay, there wasn't as much choice in the shops etc when it came to invitations. I made them with a motif of 2 top hats and embellished them with tiny miniature bow-ties, so it really tied in nicely.
I'll try and post a picture later if I can work out how to!0 -
