Is thunderbird still buggy to the point it'll periodically corrupt your profile and delete all your emails? ....or did they ever fix that?

How many years ago was that ?!

I have been using thunderbird for years and never had a problem as you describe.

While I was waiting for my new computer to arrive I used gmail. This has the disadvantage, from my point of view that it groups all your emails automatically with the same subject. I work as a freelance and quite often get emails with a generic heading about different aspects of the same subject. This means I have to disagregate the emails to file them. Can I stop gmail auto grouping incoming emails? OE did not do this, does Live Mail?

There is another problem with gmail. I match sent emails in the same folder as the relevant incoming ones. Not necessaily by subject header but by content. You could do this quite easily with OE, where incoming and outgoing emails were all handled separately, it is fiddly in the extreme with gmail. (You can label incoming emails to group them but to label sent emails, you have first to move them into the in box and only then label them which makes it a two step process).

When I got my new PC I imported all myOE emails and found it had not imported the address book. So I decided to do it manually - there is supposed to be an import address command in the contact button but it is not there in mine. I was then directed to log onto Contacts separately. When I tried to do this using my gmail id I got an error message.......

This is called "Conversation View" and can be switched off in gmail settings

Yes I was going to say the same. There's also heaps of other settings in Gmail that make it look and work much better.

As for the email client, I'd agree with most others here, Thunderbird is great. There's almost 100 visual themes for Thunderbird too. So you can give it the same style as Outlook, Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. There's even one that can make Thunderbird look like Outlook Express. Plus they're dead easy to apply, just download the file and "drag and drop" it into an open Thunderbird window, simples!
