Don't like Windows Live Mail are there any OE type alternatives?

I have recently acquired a new PC running Win 7. It turns out that the only email available is Windows Live Mail. I thought I would try gmail instead but don't really like it (can't move classify sent items direct under the relevant label for example. And to be honest I don't like the way it strings emails with same name together. I often receive emails with the same subject but different content and then have to unravel them).
So I decided to try Windows Live Mail instead and I don't like that either. For a start you need to load up contacts separately - I cannot import my contacts book - and it suffers from many of the cloud email issues that gmail does, and, the killer really, for some reason it will not allow me to use my gmail id as my Livemail id.
I looked up explanations on the web and only found endless tedious technical descriptions of work arounds for this and other shortcomings.
Sorrryyy but I liked Outlook Express and want something similar to replace it. Anyone got any suggestions? I have plenty of storage capacity and no problems storing loads of emails on my new PC.

Unless you want to pay for Outlook, then Thunderbird is probably your best option.0

I should have mentioned that I am running Windows 7 Professional 64bit version.
I had considered Thunderbird but found this review
"Currently, the only released 64 bit email client is Windows Mail, included with Vista 64. Windows 7 does not include an email client.
There is a development project for 64 bit Thunderbird 3, the latest build, 3.05, codenamed Shredder, is available here. Unfortunately, moving from your existing email client to 64 bit Thunderbird 3 can be quite a challenge.Migration from Outlook is relatively simple with Vista 64bit version using the Thunderbird 3 import function. This approach doesn't work under Windows 7 due to changes in the registration of MAPI entries which no one appears to want to acknowledge or address."0 -
They are talking about a pure 64bit client, but the 32bit version of Thunderbird runs fine on Win 7 pro 64bit0

I'm somewhat confused by OPs claims. I've certainly had none of the problems they claim and to me Windows Live Mail is just an upgraded version of OE.
The contacts is simple - assuming it doesn't automatically get picked up you export the original contacts file as a .csv then import it.
I don't understand the comment about not being able to use their Gmail address as their Livemail ID - why would they want to? Windows Live Mail doesn't stop you having a Gmail account included0 -
+ 1 for Thunderbird.
Runs Fine on my 64 bit Windows 7 machine.

I second Thunderbird - I hated Windows live mail - I have several Gmail accounts and it was very easy to put them into it - even easier than Outlook express. I also use the calendar (Lightning) - only quibble I have about this is that you can colour code categories (ie holidays) but when the pop up its only a wee coloured line in the box not the whole box that colour like Outlook. Only a minor quiblle but find it all very user friendly and easy.Kondo'ed 76 items from wardrobe, 4 carrier bags of books0

Is thunderbird still buggy to the point it'll periodically corrupt your profile and delete all your emails? ....or did they ever fix that?0
