Will leave these 2 going off the thread for a glass of wine or 3!!!....:D

We actually did it the other way round and got lucky really - We were only looking for a particular house in a particular area that don't come up in our price range very often. We thought it wasn't worth putting the house on the market if we didn't find something we liked for a year. We found the house we liked, viewed it, told the owner we were going to put our house on the market that day (we did have it all "ready to go"...all de-cluttered and re-decorated ready to sell..waiting for "that" house). We put in an offer and the owner said he wouldn't discuss it any further until we had sold our house. Luckily, house sold within a week, but it doesn't always work like that. If you are not as particular as we were, definitely put your house on the market first. Sell it, then view. If the owners of the house you like have 2 offers - you and someone else who hasn't sold, then it would more often than not go to you....so it is to your advantage.

Now, I am jealous that DG and MrB are obviously hitting the bottle, so I may have to have a glass before I go to bed (in my relatively new house, I have to say!! Have been up to my eyeballs in dulux for last 4 weeks and finished last room today...hurrah!!!!)

Good luck though, and stay sane....it can be a stressful process!!:)

Thanks for that. And congrats on the painting! I know where you're coming from, since we're just finishing re-decorating the entire house. I think it's put me off "fix-er-uppers" hehe

Up here in Scotland we usually do it the other way round, buy first then sell. But then, apart from the "offers over" problem, it is all a lot easier and more certain up here. I could never operate under the English system, it seems incredibly stressful!
If only we could combine the best of both systems into one sensible system!
  • I've always seen the house I want and then decided to sell. Impulsive buyer, I'm lucky (?) that my houses sell (or find a buyer) within days (well it was 2 weeks once).

    :)

Yeah but, who wants a house in Scotland. It's full of foreigners. ;)

I suppose I could say the same of England!!!

Actually, you are correct, there are an amazing number of English people living up here. Something to do with the "quality of life" apparently.
