Thames Water OTT arrears..

First post on this great forum, I need some help.

We recently moved into a flat about a month ago. We contacted all relevant utilities on moving day etc. Having been told by Thames Water to wait until we receive a bill, we did. This week a bill came through for £1043! (it was a final demand, despite never receiving a previous demand!) I contacted them and they said this is arrears from previous property. Now, upon moving into our previous property, 2 years ago, we received a bill for £3000!! Contacted them and they sent out an engineer and we discovered that the meter was broken, when water was being used the meter stopped, when water wasn't being using the meter began clocking up!

It turns out that this problem wasn't logged by the engineer so as far as Thames Water are concerned the meter must have 'sorted itself out'!!

So we are lumped with this huge bill that is completely ridiculous and is due to a fault at their end. I have asked for an investigation but I am not holding out much hope.

Has anyone had similar problems or is there advice anyone can give?

    Wewlcome to the forum.

Surely you must have had several bills during the 2 years in the previous property.

    Were the meter readings estimated?

What did you pay during that 2 years?

We do have the bills and all receipts from Pay Point payments for two years. They were estimated. I have done all the correct things this side, surely the problem lies with them?

If they were estimated, you should have notified them immediately of the correct readings.

You haven't said how much you paid?

    Where was the meter?

If you have used that much water - which seems very unlikely - you will be expected to pay for that water.

By not correcting the estimated meter readings for two years, you have a problem in convincing them that the readings were wrong.

Do you have any correspondence about the £3000 bill when you moved in?
