just wanted to talk... my cat died today!

My cat died at the vets today before they could put him to sleep. We have two other cats but i am now worried they are going to fret for him because they cry for him to come in from street at night.

Its so upsetting we had him 12 years and he was a great character and even taught my other cats a trick or two including how to get the lid off the biscuits!.

On Friday he seemed to be breathing funny out of his mouth, and saturday very laboured breathing altogether but still eating. They put him in a oxygen tent but this did no good he was too far gone.

As a cat and general pet lover I am so upset and just needed to let my emotions out.

  • You are not alone.
My boy died last month. He had been losing weight and back and forth to the vets but nothing was found until they opened him up.
The vet phoned to say what she had found and did we want to make a decision while he was unconscious.
We asked her to put him to sleep and she said it was the right decision as cats are very resilient but he was desperately poorly inside.
He was cremated and we scattered his ashes where he liked to while away the day outside.
His brother and two sisters missed him and it was about a week before they stopped looking for him.
It's hard not to be able to explain it to them isn't it?
He was 11 years old and beautiful and we miss him still.
You will stop crying and your other cats will get used to the idea in time that he isn't coming back.
Make a special fuss of them and take heart from the fact we have all been through it and you do come out the other side.
    It just takes time.

    Hi,
I'm very sorry for your loss. It's a very sad time when we lose a pet, they are one of the family.
When it happens suddenly it is a shock too.

Our dog died at home, recently. She was elderly and we had been watching her with a view to taking her to the vet to be pts, when mother nature stepped in.

We now have just the cat. She's lost two dogs, one of whom she was close to. She reacted differently each time. The first one she spent a lot of time sleeping and lying in the dog's bed. I let her be, and didn't wash the bedding or anything for some time.

This time she seems more clingy. She's fussing a lot more and wanting attention. But she doesn't seem unhappy.

I'm sure your cats will miss him, and grieve in their own way, but it will get better for them....and for you.

    Thinking of you. x

  • Thank you so much for all your kind words, it has lifted me a little but I still feel raw and sad. thanks sooo much. x
  • So sorry to hear this, it's heartbreaking and unfortunately inevitable when we share our lives with our beloved ones.

Your other cats are bound to miss him too and they won't understand but will stop looking for him eventually.

(((hugs))) for you, it's a terrible time but it will get better. Think of the good times and his wee tricks and the mischief he got up too.

RIP wee one, run free at the bridge and play hardxxx

I am so sorry for your loss, having lost Orbit in 2009,I know the pain that their loss can cause. It sounds like your cat had the same thing Orbit did, however he was treatable & he lasted another year with the help of meds.

    RIP Wee Puss.

I think they become more than that, they become part of the home & when they are gone, the home feels lifeless & empty,as if the soul has been ripped out of it.That's how I felt when Orbit passed away.Getting Daisy a week later helped immensly & gave her a forever home & a unpaid servant to do her bidding!
