freeze your blackberries...IF I was THEN planning to jam them I would just freeze them in a tub (eg an ice cream tub.) This will kill any 'passengers' anyway
what I always do with them is make JELLY as opposed to jam so...
pop your frozen blackberries in a pan (you may wish to thaw them first)
for each 1l ice cream tub allow 1 small or half a large cooking (Bramley apple) -wash and halve/quarter, add to pan
Cover (just) with water; bring to boil and simmer until fruit has broken down (at LEAST half-an-hour - covered if you can)
strain through muslin (overnight - DON'T squeeze - apparently it makes the juice cloudy and, (despite being an inveterate fiddler) this is something I have never done!
chuck the pulp on the compost bin (I always have, without problems)
allow 1lb (pound) of granulated sugar to each pint of strained liquid
bring to boil; simmer for about 10 mins or until jamming temperature reached
 test for set (saucer, wrinkles)
 pot into warmed jars
jelly is made from extracted juice (the above method) and is VERY good for small stoned fruit e.g. damsons. cherries; jam is made from the whole fruit (pulp) - ie fruit without stupid pips or little stones
The apple in the above recipe provides the pectin which blackberries dont have. You get a jam which looks clear and purple, like a Fox's Glacier fruit sweet and tastes INCREDIBLE and is so well worth making!
 OR
Open freeze by washing/laying out on trays then put in a tub when frozen. For pies etc I would soak first to remove passengers. (ie before freezing)
However - I spent my childhood eating these from the bush, unwashed. I would never eat any grown by the side of a road or low down on a bush BUT I ate plenty unwashed and never knew, until I was older, that they could have grubs in. I have lived to tell the tale.
(And even now I still eat them straight from the bush...:p)

Went to bed at same time as the kids last night - they were late and I was early, to try and make myself get back into a sleep routine. Have been staying up later to talk to dh who has been doing loads of 8am -10pm shifts, but then getting up with kids at 6ish so they get to see him as well. He is working a nice normal 8-4 today so we all get to see him in daylight:rotfl:.

We have more boxes coming but not until tonight so need to get on with other bits and bobs. I have just changed some more name/address details and sorted our banking out. The next thing is to sort out mortgage life insurance, I found a good deal yesterday but want to see if my current company can better it first. Will sort that and then post a list of what else I need to. A surveyor is coming between 9-12 this morning for the new build company to organise selling our house on so I will be in anyway.MFW 2025 No. 7 £1931.07/£2700
