Slug pellets around edible crops
We have some edible peas, in a 5 litre pot.
Unfortunately slug pellets have been put in the pot on the soil surface.
The pellets are homebase and say for use around edible and non-edible plants contains 3% metaldehyde
would you want to eat [strike]them?[/strike] the peas?

YesI've been using slug pellets in this garden since we came here in 1971 and we're both still alive.0

The peas yes ~ The slug pellets No !!0 -
When you last went to the supermarket or veg shop and bought produce, did you enquire whether the farmer used slug pellets on the land? Could the vendors have answered that question?
A large proportion of the slug pellets scattered in this country is used on farm land, not back gardens.
I'd guess if you buy organic, you are 'safe.' That's not the majority of us.0 -
They are only a problem if you, or pet, hedgehog etc eat the pellets
Not sure if true, but according to Wiki "Metaldehyde is an organic compound" so could be classed as organicEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -

Hi,
I do usually eat organic. Metaldehyde would not be used on organic fams, they use copper sulphate.
I will be eating the peas.
Thanks for all replies0 -

Copper sulphate ! ~ Bordeaux powder main ingredient, which is being withdrawn from the market. Given a choice I'd eat the Methaldehyde !!
Copper sulphate is a poisonous substance which neither bees nor worms care for and can take a long time to break down in the soil.0 -
YesThere is controversy and concern about what they are allowed to use, i.e. copper sulphate.0

That's why I don't buy organic. Most of the Natural "safe" pesticides used in organic farming over the last few years have been withdrawn from the market !
If you want something natural try Nemaslug0 -
YesThe sweetener used in diet fizzy drinks (Aspertame) reacts with something in your body (I can't remember what) to form small amounts of formaldehide. So if you swallow a slug, drink some diet coke and he'll be a gonner. :whistle:0
