New flat, internet access questions?

Hi
I am about to move into new accommodation at very short notice (cirumstances beyond my control) and want to have internet access there, I have a few questions.
I don't want a landline phone, just internet access. I also don't want to enter into a contract that I couldn't cancel beyond a months notice.
I have done some research into PAYG web, mostly it seems to come from Mobile phone operators. It seems a reasonable option, however are there cheaper options?.
Also (and maybe more importantly) I have a desktop rather than a laptop. Do the "dongle deals" work equally with desktops?.
Any advice appreciated.
Regards
John

if you have a smart phone then you could set that up as the modem with an unlimited internet plan for £15 per month on PAYG you then have internet on the go and in the house. you just have to tether the phone to the PC while using it that way I did it for months until I got fixed line BB.Someone please tell me what money is0

Plusnet do rolling monthly contract on their phone aswell as their broadband.
"What's the minimum contract period and will it affect my Broadband service?
Our packages have a minimum 1 month contract. Signing up for a special offer or package may mean a longer term."

Not that the OP wants a landline service.:D0 -
Problem with any ADSL service is that you need a landline, and in almost every case that is a 12m line rental contract, AFAIK the Post Office is the only exception.
You will of course pay more for a short term contract, plus the initlal line connection charge.
Mobile broadband is rarely an adequate substitute for ADSL, but may be suited to your circumstances-but first of all you need to establish that a 3G signal is actually available in the property, and from which network(s). That alone will detrmine your choice of network. No free lunch, and no free laptop
