IGNORE : I SOLVED IT

I have been using an old version of Firefox on here for years with no issues. Click a thread inside a forum and the link opens in the existing tab as it should.

I've just bought a new iMac so installed the latest version of FF as well as Chrome and have Safari as standard. Now, in every browser, whenever I click a thread link inside a forum it opens a new tab or, in Safari, a new window. None open in the existing tab as they should.

If you click a forum heading link then it opens the new forum inside the existing tab as it should. SO it's only on thread links that this happens.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Care to share? I have the same problem and have had to switch to the "new" forum view to get around it. It's been a couple of months now and I still don't like it much.

If you've found a way I can revert to my old view I'd love to know it.

Me too! I've had no luck playing around with Chrome's settings or trying to find an add-on that changes the behaviour. :(

Similar problem here when logging out that only happens on the MSE website..

I am on FF7 too and when I click 'Log Out' a small pop up box asks 'are you sure you want to log out' and when I select OK a new MSE tab opens up.

Found it. Login to MSE, go to User CP option near the top of the page. Select from the left hand bar Edit Options and scroll to the very bottom of the page. In the Forum Skin drop down list select New Look or New Look - less bright version and then click Save Changes.
