A New Idea For The Site

Options
Could we change the way we post topics, so the kind people who do put freebies up receive the credit.

On a website I visit, you can hide the links, and you are unable to see it until you post a reply.

At the moment anyone can see any links.

I take the free itunes codes as a prime example. Some nasty twit has robbed the codes without as much as a thank you.

Would it not be better for the posters to get some recognition?

Thanks

it sounds like you mean when people post codes that can only be used once (rather than all freebies) i think pm would work fine for that, otherwise we'll just end up trawling through loads of needless replies to get to the good stuff and people already complain about that without making it worse - just ,y thoughts
Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

Private Message...click on the persons ID and you can send a message to their box...

PM = Private message. You click on the persons username at top left of their post and 1 of the options is "send private message".

If you have a PM it will tell you at the top of the forums - on the right , where it says - Welcome. Joozy. - just underneath there.

    HTH!

Thanks so much for all your replies! I guess I should have used 'PM' with the Itunes codes; will know for the next time.

Seeing as there are always more guests viewing the boards than are logged in (as I post this.......384 logged in, and 1006 more not logged in/signed up). This idea would mean that the vast majority of people that read these forums could miss out on offers/deals. This would take away part of what this site is about.

    Thanks

    All true enough pabs.

Some of it comes down to the way that people post specific freebies though. Take your (very relevant) itunes code example. If I had any of those (and I might post some spare CD-WoW codes in due course actually) I'd probably say something like:

"...first person to PM me who has over xx number of Thanks at MSE"

...whatever xx number seemed appropriate. That way people who at least have been seen by others to have contributed would get something as opposed to the lurkers who do nothing...but lurk! :)

Perhaps my idea could be expanded on.

The problem could be solved by making the forum private.
TBH I used a few of the discount codes for things before I joined - what made me join was the fact that I wanted to give something back in return. I know others can be more selfish in this respect - I guess it's what sort of person you are?
Perhaps making the first post of a thread private & making responses public could prevent spongers but still encourage non-members to join?

I am a member of a forum (www.digital-forums.com) that tried the 'hide hack' as it was known. The trouble with it was that it created paaaaaages and paaaaaages of comments like ta, and ty just to see the link and even then people might have a look and decide it's not for them, so comments build up for no reason creating masses of, well, nothing.
Nice idea but it doesn't really 'work'.

Recognition is given in the way of rep points like many forums use nowadays, just not MSE, but a quick click on the thanks button is half way there for a single thread anyway, it's just there's no way of knowing if a member is helpful or not on here from a quick glance at their info to the left of the comments box.
I've no idea what the stars are for lol.

To access the bargains bit on DF you have to make a certain amount of posts, and not any old tosh either, they have to be constructive posts or you'll never get access.
