Dishwashers- need a reliable one?

We have never had an expensive dishwasher and we have never had an unreliable one either. You will find that there are quite a few appliance snobs on this forum. Our present one is a Hotpoint Aquarius and its been working perfectly well for quite a few years. In fact, we have never had a fault on either the D/W or the W/M, which required an engineer to visit. The time scale I am talking about is 50 years I have never felt the need to buy expensive appliances in the hope of getting one that was more relaiable than run of the mill brands. Of course, it may just be that we are lucky.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
With things like dishwashers and washing machines, you get what you pay for. A cheap one is built down to a price, simple as that.
I've had both Siemens and Bosch and both have lasted 10 years, used every day.For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
Whichever make of appliance you buy, it's only as good as the service you get from the manufacturer, especially if it breaks down outside warranty. We've had several italian made dishwashers over the last 40 years, all lasting 10 years+, but going for a new fitted kitchen last December, decided to go for all Neff appliances, including dishwasher. It never worked properly from the off, sometimes refusing to start, other times stopping in mid-cycle, and occasionally, continually running for several hours until I had to manually stop it. We put up with it for several months, then called in the engineer, who diagnosed a faulty door seal which was expanding, causing the door switch to open and thus stop the machine. With this replaced, he pronounced the machine OK. As a recently retired Electrician with almost 50 years experience, I could not see how the door seal could cause the 'running-on', although I accepted that it would cause the non-start/mid-cycle stop condition. About a week later, the machine again 'ran-on, so we recalled the engineer (a different guy) who diagnosed the programme module, which he did not have on the van, so would need to order it. A week later, a third engineer arrived to fit the module, also changed a switch on the water inlet, and we ended up with the machine now totally non-functioning. More parts were ordered, and the engineer called today at 12.20pm whilst we were out, after having been specifically told that there would be no-one home until after 2pm. I immediately called BSH, only to be told the next earliest appointment was monday next (6 days away), so we are now left with a totally non-functioning machine, and a further wait of almost a week before the next engineer visit. So, to date, we've gone 8 weeks with these faults, 3 different engineers, all diagnosing different faults and ordering different parts which they don't carry on the vans, and take no notice of what time is suitable, even though the service form asks for "additional comments" such as this, so as you may guess, I have little or no faith in BSH service, or indeed the ability of it's "engineers" to actually correct these faults. I have already emailed BSH "Customer Liaison" of my intention to reject this machine as not fit for purpose if the next engineer visit does not bring about a complete correction of the machines problems........As you may guess, I have not yet received a reply!
Basically, before you spend your cash, make sure that, should you require it, manufacturer service is as good as it's cracked up to be........BSH certainly isn't!!!0 -

Might be worth a read.
And this it uses miele washing machines as the example but affects all brands/products proportionally.

We have had the same experience.
First Hotpoint washer lasted 17 years of young family abuse with a couple of easy motor brush swaps
First HP DW lasted 12 years.
In both cases we were happy to change them, again HP, because styles move on as does technology. Lower power and water use is key in this world of increasing consumption costs.
Family who rate BSH have been disappointed with their latest purchases.
Are longer cycles down to lower water usage? Guess you need to keep reusing for longer?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Update to my previous posts concerning ongoing problems with our Neff dishwasher. After a visit from a fourth different Neff engineer, who replaced the programmer (again!), and the complete water fill assembly, spending the best part of two hours on the machine, it then functioned perfectly for the next three operations, then the 'running-on' fault occurred again. By now, I'd had enough, and contacted Neff again, rejecting the machine and informing them that I was prepared to take further action against them if necessary. A few days later, Neff informed me that, due to all the problems I'd had, they were replacing the machine with new, and would be in touch shortly to inform me of delivery/installation details. A few days later, the replacement was efficiently installed by a company called DBD, who apparently specialise in replacement of 'duff' appliances from many of the well known manufacturers. Upshot of this is that, at last, we have a machine that works as it should. Shame it's taken so long though, and it still doesn't instill much confidence in the service side of BSH especially since we have four other Neff appliances bought at the same time.
I am aware that one or two posters are kitchen planners/retailers who will defend BSH appliances, since they profit from the sale of them, but of course, when problems arise, they will just refer you to the manufacturers service agents, they don't have to sort out the problems, it's left to you, the customer, to deal with the service agents at your expense! Basically, EVERY manufacturer makes the occasional 'Friday' models, but to get things sorted unfortunately takes time.0
