Exchange rate different from paying to receiving

So we went to thompsons to buy currency for our wedding and honeymoon, laid 1k on the table for 42 mauritian rupees to the pound, so were expecting 4200 back, when the missus collected the money, we only got 3900, the excuse given that the exchange rate changed (she didn't argue the case)
My understanding is that we made a point of contract, money had been exchanged, can Thompsons do this? Can I quote something, I'm quite riled and will request the manager on Monday, this has cost us £65 quid
Any help/advice please!

"Went to Thompsons(sic)" and "Laid £1000 on the counter" doesn't sound much like you bought them online.
So what you are writing is that you paid for them last Saturday in store when they were at a certain rate and now they are giving you less when you go to pick up.
The problem with this story is that I doubt if Thomsons were offering 42 Rupees to the Pound. Have you anything written down to this effect? Any kind of receipt or slip?
Even on their website they are offering 40.2 and last week it could have been only 0.5 of a Rupee higher. So 40.7 Rupees available on-line. So it's likely they would offer even less in-store.
Whatever possessed you to buy your currency there anyway?0
