Had an accident today (if you can call it that)...

It's just a classic case of insurance fronting, you're insured for a car you never drive as is your gf, and you're both main drivers of cars without being named on the insurance.
You deserve all you get imo.0

Thanks for that but what is insurance fronting, and why do you think she is my g/f?. We splitup many months ago... I live over 200 miles from her.0

Insurance fronting is when you insure a car you're the main driver of in someone else's name to get cheaper insurance.
But the cars wern't in someone else's name, we swapped documents.... I drove her car round which was in my name for many months and the same for her. She then had an accident and said i could drive the one she was insured on round, albeit with just 3rd party insurance.
The police never said anything when i got pulled over for speeding. He checked on their database to see if my cover allowed me to drive hers and it did. I told him the car was registered in her name and he didn't bat an eyelid. Otherwise he would have done me for no insurance then too wouldn't he?.0

the police wont get involved in a fronting case. albeit they pulled you, thats down to the insurers to decide.
 this case bourders on that.
you drive one car not reg to you she drives the other not reg'd to her under cheap insurance from your existing policy's you drive long term under DOV cover, dov cover is not to be used long term, its there incase you need it when you existing car is being fixed and being able to borrow another vehicle in the short term or emergency. you admitted that it was cheaper for both of you to insure your cars this way, effectivly defrauding and fronting the insurance company as they believe your ex owned and drives and main driver of the car you have in your possetion and vice versa when you were together doing this YOU BOTH WERENT INSURED. again if you read you policy it should tell you DOV is for short term and if prolonged use of a vehicle is needed you need to insure it or be a named driver on said policy's. how have you been taxing i'm sure no PO will not tax it because you have no insurance policy for that car, and insuring online? your ex would have to send you tax and vice versa if she lived 200 miles away having to communicate MOT CERT NUMBERS ETC ETC, double the risk for it to go missing in post!? had you been cought speeding via fixed camera or mobile safety partnership your ex would have had the speeding fine, then she would have had to pass it onto you and vice versa, had she not responded she would have been liable for your mistake.0

It was on the side of the road by a policeman.
Jesus i never knew this could happen. But we never drove each others car from the off. We swapped documents and as i said i drove her car for many months, if she hadn't have had the accident i'd still be driving it now.
As for tax they are both insured for a year and done on-line before we swapped.
I still fail to see how it can be classed as defrauding as we swapped documents and actually drove around with the cars registered to us for many months. I could see where you are coming from if we had swapped straight back from the off, but that simply did not happen.
Does it say it can't be used long term then in the insurance details..? I never knew that, i thought you could drive any car third party as long as it is not registered in your name?0

Nearly a year ago my (now ex) and i swapped cars because i lost my job and it was cheaper for me to insure myself on her car. We also exchanged documents too.
Six or so months later we split up. We decided to swap cars back and drive each others 3rd party only etc and keep the documents as they were. But the cars wern't in someone else's name, we swapped documents.... I drove her car round which was in my name for many months and the same for her. She then had an accident and said i could drive the one she was insured on round, albeit with just 3rd party insurance.
 Hmmm... two different stories lol0

What is different there...? They basically say the same thing...
*EDIT* I should say that when we swapped cars i had actually moved out as the relationship was on the rocks. Things were ok for a while but about six months later we split for good. At no time did any of this happen while under the same roof.
I don't know if that's what you were thinking but the cars were never registered at the same place when we swapped documents etc.0

            What an odd story...
The guy comes back to his car when it's hit, then moans about how he works hard for it.
Then later that day you return to the same car park and it is still there and the owner returns to the car again, but this time it belongs to his company.
Now you've got your ex girlfriends car 200 miles from where she lives.

OP things are not stacking up, your extremely unclear.
your GF's car you said firstly, you swapped with because you lost your job and was cheaper to insure than yours, great, chanmged docs and had insurance covered.
then six months later decided to split she wanter her car back you exchanged and had your ORIGINAL CAR BACK,. but you didnt inform DVLA of any changes of registered keeper, eventhough you had the V5 there waiting to do so you also didnt inform your insurance of change of vehicle details and as it remains they still think you own a car that now your EX has and has had for months.
i'll explain the fronting bit clearly here:
main driver of your car: YOUR EX GF
 main policy holder:YOURSELF
<fronting bit the car you insured on is different to the car you drive.
 main drive of her car:YOURSELF
 main policy holder:YOUR EX GF
CAR YOU HAVE NOW: subura impreza wrx sti uk300
CAR YOUR INSURED ON:fiesta 1.3 encore
<defrauding bit as the cost of the car would be greatly higher had it be normally.
CAR EX HAS NOW:fiesta 1.3 encore
CAR SHE HAS INSURANCE ON:subaru impreza wrx sti uk300
