The main page of an MOT cert has a tick box for whether there are advisories. It happen to the missus... we checked the MOT before we bought, and it was ticked. It took them 20 minutes to find the advisory sheet!

Oh, I had an advisory to get my cambelt done. I enquired about this as it was done 20K ago. They said it was standard procedure to put it on 'as a reminder to those who may not have done it'... hmmmm methinks that maybe it is to fleece unsuspecting customers? - it was a Halfrauds autocentre btw.

OP - I actually agree with you on the brakes despite what some say.

The key thing that hasn't been asked though is what car is it? How old is it? and what's the mileage?

The rusty discs are not so much an issue and the pads seem ok as they haven't been noted but the lipped disc does indicate wear.

I'm surprised at some posters saying it will be fine to the next MOT. I'd have thought several would have supported the 'an MOT isn't the service' point of view. Just because it passed a test doesn't mean it will be fine for 12 months at all.

On the plus side, they are just lipped, they've not noted they are at minimum thickness or anything so I would say they are ok but if you plan on doing a lot of miles keep an eye on them and/or budget for a swap out at some point. Likewise tyres, perhaps the car hasn't moved a lot in its life which might explain why the tyres look weathered but the tread hasn't come up as an issue.

What does bother me is the loss of the advisory sheet. I always have doubts about any motor where this has gone missing - even more so if they say they never had one and especially if there is a staple hole in the top corner!

If you asked what the advisories were and were lied to then I would walk away. If the car is straight, priced well and will do the job you want it to do, budget for discs if needed and go ahead would be my thought.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Alexlyne, abusing the advisory part of the MOT like that was worthy of a complaint to both Halfords HQ and VOSA. Nothing like using a government scheme to drum up business.

Have you seen my seatbelt? No. And there's not many cars that have steel brakepipes any more...
I'm not bothered the least about your seatbelts, that's your concern, but steel brake pipes are a real issue on cars from say 5 to 15 years old, hence my post
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

But the OP's new car does not have rusty brake pipes. It has rusty brake discs, which is normal and expected for a car that has been standing for more than half a day.

Rusty brake pipes are, of course, a serious problem and if the OP's car had that in an advisory then I suspect the advice given in this thread would be to get it sorted ASAP, or demand that the dealer do so.

Did the op state what the advisories were? No, which is why I picked up on the seat belt thing,

IE, advisories are warnings of items that are not perfect, and without knowng to ins and outs saying a reply is rubbish is just the reply I'd expect from certain quarters,

From the first post in this thread:
Have just discovered after MOT that there are some Advisory Items listed which I didn't expect.
    1. Advises rear tyres weathered on outer sidewalls
    2. Advises rear brakes binding slightly
    3. Advise rear brake discs lipped and corroded

. Calling the car a shed based on those advisories is ridiculous and telling the OP to go for a better car after they've already bought it is a bit late IMHO. :)

So maybe the op should have asked earlier????????????

Ok, fair enough can't keep up with everything, BUT, in the spirit of what I've posted, none of those issues will last for years as the seatbelt of hammy chap might .:A

Indeed not, but all cars will eventually need new brake discs and tyres. They are wear items, and in any case the brake related advisories will likely fix themselves in the first hundred miles.

Hammy's seatbelt? entirely up to him, only way it will ever effect somebody else is if he bounces off their windscreen after exiting his, which is quite unlikely even if the belt were unsafe.
