MOT Advisory items - new car

Quite right what people have said on advisories. take it to another garage-possibly different advisories or none at all. All at the discretion of the tester.
Nothing to get concerned about. As surely as night follows day capitalism will come crumbling down. On a mission to secure a just and ethical society.0 -

- Advises rear tyres weathered on outer sidewalls
- Advises rear brakes binding slightly
- Advise rear brake discs lipped and corroded
1. £100 for 2 new tyres if your concerned
2. Probably caused by the surface corrosion. The pads are digging into the corrosion as it will be an un-smooth surface. See 3. for more info.
3. Brakes disks will surface corrode if sat unused, driving the car clears this up as the pads will take it off.
The lip is present as the brake disk wears down, as the disk wears it gets a lip. You could either remove the lip from the disk if the thickness is good, or have them replaced.0 -
As above, the slight binding is more than likely because the car has been stood and using the brakes will sort this, however:
Depending on car new rear discs and pads done at a garage will set you back around £150 and 2 new tyres will cost £100, both these jobs will need sorting fairly soon, ask yourself, is the car still a good deal if you need to spend a further £250, if not walk away, my guess is that if you threaten to pull out of the deal the dealer will offer some sort of compromise.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
Bought my car brand new in 2005. Serviced every year by the main dealer, and still under 12k miles driving. (disability)
My last MOT had advisories on it.
As above, only way to bypass advisories is to buy new.
What happens if they tell you a rear light is not working on your car? do you ask for your money back?
It's an early warning on an MOT that these are items that may need attention between now and the next MOT.0 -
The OP has already boght the car and I imagine they can not now walk away without losing at least part of any deposit left.
If I was the OP I would be pushing for new tyres and leaving the brakes until later on. A bt of give and take is probably required here.
How old is the car? Sounds as if it is over 7 years old and as such is beyond it's economic lifespan and will potentially start to have other things go wrong over the coming few years.
OP you have been messing about looking for a car for over a month at some point you will need to deal and if it worries you so much buy a new or a car under 3 year old that is still under warranty.0 -
I suppose the only thing you can do is walk away and lose your deposit ??? You haven't mentioned if there is anything stopping you from walking away.
Or you could ask the seller to measure the brake disc thickness to check they are not worn below limit, but you should be careful that they are only checked after the car has been driven to clear the surface corrosion. as the surface corrosion will give a false reading on the disc thickness.
I would expect the MOT tester to know if they are close to or worn below limit and make an advisory of that but they do not actully measure the thickness, so it is possible he has missed this.
I would want to know what the disc thickness is and what the minimum thickness allowed for the model is, and what the new thickness is. so you will know how much wear you have until you need new discs.0 -
I had two advisories in Jan 2009 for the exhaust and brake discs.
In 2010 and 2011, the car has passed its MOT without any work needing doing, and no reference to the need to change the exhaust or brake discs before the next MOT.
Then again - in 2009, the MOT was done by Nationwide Autos - 2010 & 2011 has been done by my local garage.0 -
If they won't fix known issues then you have to walk away. PLEASE
Advisories will pass, but for christs sake if they are accurate they mean that the car will fail next year and all will have to be addressed. Go for a better car and leave the shed with the garage.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Second hand car dealers have a habit of loosing the advisory sheet and calling your bluff thinking you will never know about the advisories.0
