I am not sure the sentences being handed out are that lenient.A mum-of-two who slept through the riots will spend the next five months behind bars – because she accepted a pair of looted shorts the morning after.
Ursula Nevin was in bed at home when city centre shops were ransacked by vandals.
What I don't understand is how they know the pair of shorts were plunder? You better watch out on Ebay:eek:'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. The son is over 18. If she just threw him out could her & her daughter stay?
If they are going down this roadUnder housing rules his mother – as the tenant – can be evicted from their two-bedroom flat in Battersea if anyone living there is involved in criminality
They should do it to all criminals.0 -
Might be a good idea to wait until they are found guilty before vilifying them
Stevie, steveie, stevie.
They have been arresting these people due to CCTV. How would they have known to arrest him if:
A) He wasn't there, so wasn't seen.Wasn't picked up on CCTV.
Even his own mother admits he was there, by stating he wasn't wearing a balaclava, and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Wrong place wrong time? Good lord. First thing I would be doing is getting out of the way of all that....as many many people did. You don't find yourself in a mob riot by accident. You have enough time to get the !!!! out of the way....and the police would have helped you, as we all saw on the TV.0 -

Urm, because she states:It was said in Nevin’s defence that she had not shopped her friend because she felt a misguided sense of loyalty.
Harsh sentence I agree. But these sentences need to be harsh. We cannot have this happening again. The criminals were all on TV suggesting nothing would happen. They need to be proven wrong, or it will just get worse.
We've had a decade of namby pamby justice and the softly softy approach. This was the result. Let's try being harsh, see the result of that.0 -

What the mother has lost is the right to a secure tenancy for life.
The council has no legal obligation to re-house the son as he is 18.
BTW Wandsworth council are the only ones I know who are hardline on council tenants causing problems for their neighbours even if they haven't been convicted.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

They wil probably go and burn down the local B&Q/Sainsburys whatever if they are evicted.0

Not maybe. It was admitted!!! No maybe about it. She knew where the goods had come from, otherwise why would she feel a misguided sense to protect her friend?
It's nothing like buying a pair of shorts on ebay not knowing if they are looted or not.

.
There was talk last year of criminals being let out early because there were not enough prison places, so what is this need to be harsh about? In fact the head of the prison service has been making comments this very week.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is.
