Broadband: mobile vs fixed

I heard mention of government subsidies for broadband improvements on the radio very recently (maybe even this morning) but as it is irrelevant to me I promptly forgot what it was all about. I do recall that the sums involved would keep me in luxury for considerably longer than I expect to live but didn't seem significant in light of what would be needed to provide universal high speed broadband.0

To close off this thread, here's a summary of what I did in the end:
Bought a Vodafone dongle on a £12.50 and 2GB per month subscription and cancelled it immediately so that I would be charged for the first month only. Connection was pretty reliable and download speed was about 1.5mbps i.e. not great but enough to tie me over, until my broadband line with Primus Saver was activated. This is now up and running superbly, getting speeds of 12mpbs, all working well so far. Actually thinking about upgrading from their 20GB/month to their unlimited downloads package.0
