Just want to relieve my hangover with a quick rant.Tesco are selling HP deskjet 1050 printer copier scanners for £26.97.An excellent price as it comes with ink cartridges supplied. However the cost of replacement cartridges is £25.50 for colour and the same for black.£51 in all....

Welcome to the world of printer pricing, where they give away the printer so that you can keep buying the inks.

However the thing to do is shop around for your ink cartridges, and Tesco ain't exactly the cheapest place to buy replacement cartridges, they largely cater for the muggles who don't know any better. For example Tesco would charge £21.97 for a new colour cartridge for my HP deskjet, but I paid £7.02 for a genuine HP cartridge off Amazon marketplace. Which is quite a difference in my book.

What ever you do, never buy a Lexmark, "ooh that printer is only £25,I'll have that" go too buy ink a couple of weeks later " thats £20 per cartridge sir" ARRRGGHH.

I find Epsons are the best for the printer price/cartridge price balancing act.

So either HP are able to make a printer copier at a very low price indeed or the ink makers are ripping us off.

HP are both the printer manufacturers and the ink makers. Printers are cheap - the market's fairly saturated and they can't charge a fortune for something that you can get easily elsewhere.

So they tie you in to their own ink by developing printers that won't work with generic brands. That way they can charge a fortune for the ink because you can only use their ink plus you'll be reluctant to get rid of a new working printer.

That's business for you. Capitalism innit.

  • I use these refill kits for my HP printer and I have to say that although they can be a bit messy to work with, they've saved me a fortune:
