Student accounts and credit history

Hi all
Some time ago, i applied for a student bank account with my bank and got knocked back. This was a silly move because i applied well before my studies commence in October, but i just enquired about it in my bank and they got me a meeting straight away with the manager to go through it, and i assumed that because i had all my confirmation letters and confirmation of student loan etc, this would support my application for the account despite knowing i have a less than great credit history to say the least. I have no CCJs or anything like that, but various defaults on small catalogue accounts and one small credit card etc from a time i was out of work for health reasons etc. I was also on JSA at the time in between jobs, the bank didnt ask me about anything like this in advance!!
I currently work in a bank, and a number of staff in my bank the other day who are also in the same position as me, going back to uni in October or have been to uni and had experience with student accounts, seem to insist that if i re apply once i have actually started uni and have things like "student number" etc etc to provide if i try again with anyone else to get a student account, i will be accepted regardless. They also said because i work in a bank it will support me in my application but i wont be there from October onwards due to my Uni commitments etc and having to move ... i am just wondering is it true that as long as your credit history shows nothing major like CCJs and bankruptcy etc i am likely to be accepted somewhere for a student bank account with a decent overdraft etc for my time in university once my actual studies have commenced ?? I'm a mature student and 25 years of age. I know im more than likely to have been told a load of rubbish about the acceptance criteria by the people i spoke to mentioned previously, but it'd be nice to hear if there's a glimmer of hope i'd be accepted somewhere!! I am going to be in London you see so these types of accounts would give me that extra bit of re assurance.
just wondering if anyone has any info to share or if anyone in my position has been accepted once they started studying despite an adverse credit history. basically, i think i applied for the account too early given i hadnt actually started my course, and i was on JSA at the time!! my own silly fault rushing it, but hopefully i can get a bit of luck down the line ...
any feedback appreciated cheers

I had a similar thing actually, I applied before I started, then just after.
However I am now going into my second year, and have literally JUST been accepted for one with the bank I was with for years. I would recommend leaving it 6 months before re-applying though. A student and debt-free since March 2011! :beer:0
