The server itself could be compromised, it may not just be your site that is affected, have you contacted the host to tell them of the problem so they can check the server out?
[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

Unlikely, since server monitoring software would soon recognise server wide compromisation - in which case all sites should remain offline until such a compromise has been dealt with.

However, it is still worth informing your host. Have you any scripts running in the site such as wordpress or a counter script - any script at all? If you do you need to ensure these are updated to latest versions and patched.

Script injection bypasses the need for credentials - FTP compromisation is rare, script and sql injection much more common.

The absolute easiest way to solve this is to delete the entire site out if the public- html directory and re upload a fresh copy.

An even better way is to get the account reset to original condition as when purchased, but this would involve setting up databases/ email addresses again.

Please do inform your host though.

Script and sql injection? Im not sure what that is, but how do I stop it?

I contacted my host today and they suggested that I upgrad to the new Linux servers thay had ( about £10 more hmmmmm?) , anyhow I did and re uploaded my site and all seems well. They sent me an email wih suggestions as to how this happened and they also suspect cross site scripting.

I have changed all passwords, ran AV on my laptop and all ok. Spybot showed up a few things which were mostly to do with ads so I dont think they were to blame.

I will make a point of viewing the source code weekly in future.

I have contacted google through webmaster tools and asked them to reindex the site and also submitted a sitemap ( I think).

Any suggestions please as to what else I shoul or shouldn`t do.

Will the site ever reach the number one spot on google again? Ive had the site over 10 years, but recently competion is getting tough with everyone wanting to be number one. If it gets above my capabilities who do I trust to do it?

    Regards

re getting google to notice you again....

Try visiting a few blogs and forums where you can comment with a link back to your site.

Those backlinks will be found by googles spiders and they will then find you again and get you ranked once more.

As for the competition - the backlinks will add to your ranking ...
Do ensure you leaqve relevant comments on blogs though (after reading the content), so the webmaster doesn't delete the comment thinking it's spam!

There is a site that lists blogs using 'dofollow' plugins to give you the link juice - it's called followlist.com or you could do a search for dofollow blogs

(if they have no follow activated which tends to be a default setting - then your link wouldn't be seen by google)
    Hope that helps
  • If you can provide me with the following information I can be a greater help to you:
    -Server OS
    -Control panel if any
-Url of your site (PM me if you aren't allowed to post the url)
-Which software you use on your site i.e forum's, blogging software

I assume this is down to the webserver you are running (apache) not being secured correctly or at all and has been exploited. Once I have the above I can help you fix your site and tell you how to secure it so that things like this do not happen again.
