Hi all,

I have a website called ( link removed to comply with MSE)

Its over 10 years old and has always done well on google, always on 1st page and often number 1.

I tweaked it a few months ago and it disappeared from Google. I just figured that I had been greedy and added too many keywords.

I have uploaded and old copy of the website in the hope that google will forgive me. The problem is that I have run the website though and SEO progran ( IBP) and it says that I have 300 outbound links?

How can I have 300 outbound links? These link to random web sites that are nothing to do with me. Have I been hacked? What should I do?

I suspect that it is the 300 links that has made my site not rank rather than the tweaks that I made?

Any ideas please.

    Indeed, you have been hacked.

There are hundreds of links to spam stuff in the source, right click, view source, scroll down.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

    Thanks,

How do I fix it? I have uploaded an old site but the problem is still there, I suspect the problem is still on the server??

I use a FTP program that came with the website building software ( serif) . I can view the files on the server but not sure what to delete.

If I deleted everything and then uploaded my site again I think that it might not work?

Also any ideas of how it got hacked and how to stop it happening again?

Thanks, help appreaciated as work a bit quiet without the website.

you need to edit ALL the web site pages with something like Notepad to remove everything with links from the bottom of the page , then save an upload again , the links could have been there for yonks

If you don't know how to edit the pages with notepad, try downloading NVU or Kompozer (free html editors)... then get an ftp client (filezilla is free to use and simple to understand)

Then either download the pages within filezilla, open with NVU/Kompozer and delete the spam, save the pages and re-upload them.

    Hope that helps

    delete everything after
</html> on all pages and then save and upload, also have a word with you host, although most likely someone gained access though your FTP so change these details

    Thanks for all the replies.

Problem is that I built my suit in Serif which is a what you see type builder. The web site is save as a file then uploaded.

I think that the copy of the site I have on my laptop is ok anyhow, its as if as soon as I upload it it comes infected. I might be wrong but I think that there are some extra files on my server that are causing the problem. Please tell me if you think Im wrong.

Ive changed all passwords, but still no idea how anyone logged on as not easy to guess. I have checked and don`t have a virus.
Will ring easily on Monday and see if they can do anything.

    Cheers

Open the file in notepad and not Serif, it'll appear as a text file, remove the bits mentioned already, save as index.htm and not as a .txt which is the default for notepad and upload the updated file via FTP.

Or you could simply view the source direct from the webpage as mentioned already, copy/paste into notepad, edit out the junk, save as 'index.htm' or whatever the page is known by, then upload via FTP.

check all your site folders/files for anything that should not be their.

i had a client who had a similar problem, someone access his site via FTP and placed a couple of files in his images folder, which were hidden, when i did a check nothing was found as i did not know what the files the client added until the client spotted them when i made to show all hidden files.
