T Mobile rejected me, did they even do a check?

I recently tried to get a contract for an HTC Desire S through T Mobiles website, £25 a month, as i had a bad credit history in the past, i wasn't sure if they would agree to a contract, they didn't and called me to say i could get the handset if i stayed on a sim only deal for SIX months without making a late payment, i politely declined and didn't give it much thought after that.

The next day i was passing the O2 store and decided to go in and speak to one of the sales guys, i asked if he knew how the scoring system works on O2 and he said he doesn't but he's sure it's one of the strictest checks of all the networks, he also asked if i was sure if T Mobile actually did a check on me (i thought that was what they do for all applications) and the only way to find out if O2 would accept would be to try it, we filled out my info on the computer which instantly came back as accepted. He told me he's sure any of my previous bad credit would have probably been wiped by now and it sounded as if he suspected that T Mobile didn't run a check on me at all, maybe they saw i'd only been at my current address for less than a year and just fobbed me off with a "sim only" deal. I would have thought that an unsuccessful credit application would have been a red flag for O2's system

Does this mean that people are being told they 'failed' their credit check by lenders when in fact they have just been denied based on one of the questions on the application form?

No it means you failed. Those question are part of the credit check.

What the fail is depends, it could be time at an address, could be a mis match of a road or town name , could be credit history, could be too many applications to one network.

Exactly where you failed you'll never know, they won't tell you as if they did you could bypass it.

Vodafone is one of the strictest around.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

O2 are pretty easy to pass with. I've had credit problems in the past and O2 approved me for 4 accounts with them
