Vodafone quarantined my phone

I keep a mobile in my car which I use on occasions when I forget to take my main mobile with me. I very seldom use it. Last week I forgot to put my main phone before I left the house, so I was relieved to have my 'emergency' back up when I wanted to make a call. However, I got a msg saying that I used up all my credit and I should topup. I checked my balance and I have £2.35. When I queried it at the Vodafone shop I was told that because I have not used the phone for more than 3 months, vodafone put my phone in quarantine. This is really appalling service. Can they really do this without at least sending me a warning text?

Yes, read the T&C you are required to make a "chargable event" ie a call, text or top up on 180 days or you lose the credit.

At this moment you can top up and keep the credit you have, but after 6 months you will lost the crsdit and number.

And yes all networks operate that way, although some take your credit after just 90 days.

Texts are usually only valid 3 to 5 days, it's pssible they did,you didn';t turn the phone ohn an dit was deleted as undelivered.

Thanks for your reply. I had no idea that network providers can do this. Now that I know the situation, I shall use the phone at least once every 3 months. I'm just glad I found out about it b4 they cancelled my sim.

Something is wrong is with your and Voda's maths.
    3 months is 90 days, not 180.
    180 days is 6 months, not 3.

Vodafone don't surprise me anymore though...

Not my maths, the OP said at least 3 months, although it was probably more. The shop may have got it wrong though

    Voda's T&C say

6b If we suspend the mobile phone because you have chosen not to use the services (as defined in 6a3 above) for 180 days, we will, if you ask within 90 days of the suspension, reconnect the services and make available any previous credit held on your account at the time of the suspension. If you have not kept to this agreement or not used the services for 270 days, and we disconnect your mobile equipment, you will lose any credit held on your account.

The girl at the vodafone shop told me 3 months - looks like she gave me misleading information. However, using the phone once in every 6 months is even better than I had been lead to believe. I'd better top up tomorrow b4 they disconnect my sim. I don't remember the last time I used it.
