Replacing Windows 7 OS with XP

Tell them that support for XP will end in a couple of years, so it's not a sensible move at all. Better to spend an hour with them explaining the features of W7.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Take a look:

You wouldn't want your main computer running Starter, 2GB memory limit.
The consequence of running without all those features is lower memory usage (less services running), and so better speed on a low powered netbook.0 -
Windows XP has so many security holes in it is beyond belief. And it is now end of life so it is only getting critical security flaws fixed and MS are no longer releasing new software so IE is stuck at version 8 (IE9 and later won't install on XP), Direct X at version 9 and its likely that future Windows Live apps (Mail/Messenger etc) won't support XP.
So people keep telling me - however, the only time I've ever had a virus infection was when I was running Vista. I only need IE to access work applications, they haven't written those for any other browser yet, so it's fairly well assured they'll run on older versions of IE. For personal browsing, I use Chrome which works fine with Hotmail.
Lack of support from MS is irrelevant - how many people have actually asked MS for support for any version of Windoze; I certainly haven't. Anything goes wrong with my PC(s), I google it on another PC and get the solution from the public.
I've got a desktop with XP running Windoze Firewall and AVG free, and I reverted the laptop to XP a couple of years back and have same security on them.
No infections or viruses with XP. Go figure.0 -

Support in this case means that they will spend less if any time at all on improving security on the OS.
Look at it this way. Imagine they had left Windows XP in it's original incarnation. No SP1, no SP2 and no SP3. Would you feel quite as confident?
That is what is meant by 'no support'.
It's fine now, as you still have support and third party software to act as a Firewall. But that will change.
Sorry, but you lost me at AVG Free.0 -

I used SP1 for a number of years, and I'll say it again - the only time I've had a virus was with a later OS - Vista.0 -

Just an update on restoring the Windows 7 OS to Windows XP. Found out why my friend wanted to switchback to XP. Went round this afternoon to have a look at this computer. Turned it on and Windows 7 came up with a black background and a message saying that it's not genuine. Originally when the computer was bought, from Dell, it came with XP Media Centre edition. Recently Windows 7 Ultimate was put on it by someone else and after a while got the black screen and message displays. I have just finished restoring the computer back to it's original factory settings with XP Media Centre and done about 100 updates on it.0

I thought you couldn't have too much RAM in a machine?Take a look:

My main computer only has 1 GB anyway!
From that comparison list, am I right in thinking that two-fingered scrolling on a gesture-enabled trackpad is not possible with Starter?
That small difference alone would make me think twice about buying a new netbook with W7 Starter! I presume there would be no such problem with Ubuntu, though?0 -

Sounds about right. Glad you've got it sorted.0
