I always use cable ties, and leave a pair of scissors in the outside compartment of case.

I was just wondering as my partner always does, however he was at America recently and on an internal flight security cut his padlock off! Apparantly it is standard practice over there.

Do you bother padlocking your case?

Yeah I used to but they did mine in LA a few years ago, I've since joined the cable tie brigade.

I have a suitcase with a zip around outside pocket. I keep a hand towel, book and slippers in it. Also a small pair of nail scissors in a manicure set. If they ever went misssing, it wouldnt really matter, and I am sure the hotel would lend us some scissors for the cable ties! :)

we have also done the cable tie thing before, with a small pair of scissors in the outside pocket of one of our checked bags. Just so we would be aware that someone had opened it.

but anymore personally I don't think there is any point in padlocking your case...it's very, very easy for someone to get into it and close it back up if they want to - so it will look like it's never been opened. At least cases with a zipper around the outside, where the zipper pulls don't lock into place at least...maybe those hard sided cases are different.

We don't put anything of any value in our checked bags anymore...having had something with little intrinsic value but masses of sentimental value stolen changes your ways...so really no reason to lock them.

If you don't padlock, then your baggage isn't covered by travel insurance. I use the TSA locks. Any valuables ;jewellery, kindle etc go in my hand luggage. Nothing but toiletries, clothes and shoes in my main luggage and that can always be replaced.

I've had to go nearly a week without my luggage before so I always keep stuff I need on me now (change of undies, travel size toiletries etc) and hand luggage size is usually big enough for at least 2 days worth.

I use cable ties and leave a pair of nail clippers in the outside pocket of the case ready to open it at my destination. I have also had my case opened in the USA and they left a note to say it had been checked. Now I leave a spare cable tie on the top (inside so that they can secure my case after they have checked it.)

Sometimes I have used split rings. These are the rings that you use to put your keys on. To be fair if someone wants to be in your case I can't see any lock keeping them out!

I never lock mine. If someone wants to get in then they'll find a way and a big fancy lock is just an indication that there must be something in there worth stealing.

Plus there's the risk of losing the key or forgetting the combination.

I think I'm missing the point here - if there's nothing of value in the suitcase, what's the point of the locks? Nothing of value would mean unlikely to make a claim if something were to go missing, wouldn't it? And if the whole bag vanishes it's a different story.

I guess unless someone had some designer clothes or shoes in the bag, then maybe I could see the point if locking the case is required for insurance to cover anything that went missing.

AM I just not getting something obvious? :)
