Do you padlock your suitcase?

I was just wondering as my partner always does, however he was at America recently and on an internal flight security cut his padlock off! Apparantly it is standard practice over there.

Do you bother padlocking your case?

I do when I use the baggage hold but mostly I carry on the plane.

You can get certain locks that customs can open and lock up again I think.

The baggage handlers will open it if they want to, whatever type of lock you use. I simply use a cable tie to let me know if it has been opened.

I use a piece of string with a large loop so they're easily cut off. Then you can see if anyones been in it.

Nope never do - I figure that if someone wants to open a case then a little padlock is not going to stop them.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • I always use cable ties. Cheap, easy to replace and a bit of extra security.

  • generally i don't padlock, but if i do i use one of the proper ones that security can open. I thought it was well known that when travelling to/within the USA that you should use an accepted/recognised padlock.

if they want to look in the bag and it is padlocked, they will either cut off the lock or cut open your bag.

No point in padlocking or locking cases. Customs will break them to open them as I found out in Barbados.

-but if you are not allowed scissors/knife in your hand luggage, and so they are in the suitcase secured with the cable tie...?

Of course, if you have an "proper/accepted/recognised" padlock then the crooked baggage handlers won't have a key .........................will they ?
