Santander tell lies!!!

Options
I always thought that Santander were not always truthfull but now they have taken over my Abbey account I know, and they deny it!
I have a list of Bill Payments registered with Abbey, it is a letter sent from head office in 2008. I asked for an updated list and Santander say I can't have one and that I never could and such lists could never have been be sent out! I read the old letter to them quoting who sent it etc. and basically they said no that is not possible!
Are they saying I make it up???????
So now looking for a decent bank, any left?

  • Perhaps the old Abbey National could provide such a list but Santander can't.

Don't forget systems change within companies, and if it's not available now someone who hasn't been around the company for many years may never have known such a thing was available in the past.
Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!

Hi there, a list of your mandates can be printed off in any branch. Take your card with you.

There is a difference between lying and not knowing.

Trouble is we are in France for the season so can't go into the branch. It was the attitude of the person on the phone that got me she said there was no way Abbey had ever done this, and when I got the old letter out she just about called me a liar and inferred I was making it up!
  • Do you have internet banking? Are they not on there?

Unfortunately you will get such "information" from all banks and building societies in England due to the fact that some staff simply can't be bothered.

Some banks and BS have more of those "some" staff than others.....
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

I had a nightmare in one of their branches yesterday. My son wanted to close his savings and current accounts but they wanted to charge £10 to issue a cheque for the balance. They then suggested he write his own cheque (no cheque book had been issued). They offered to order a cheque book, but then wouldn't do this as he had no ID with him. He had the original paperwork from opening the account, the bank card etc. They advised to telephone their telephone banking who would order one. He did this when we got home, but they wouldn't do it as the account had been blocked as never used (money was to save for uni). They said would have to go back to the branch with ID. I used to work for the Nat West and can never remember asking a customer for ID to order a cheque book. It seems like delaying tactics to slow you up from closing an account.

The ID at the branch will be to lift the 'dormancy block' off of the account, until which they can't even issue another cheque book (for security reasons). Once the block has been removed (making the account 'active' again), ask them to close your current account(s) into any saving account your son still has (assuming he has proof of account ownership for that savings account - Cash card + bank statement and his other ID should do the trick).

As long as he does, once ALL of the money is in that one savings account, he can ask for a cheque to be drawn for free from here (as savings accounts can't have cheque books). Job done. ;)

Umm, why not just transfer all the savings into the current, then close the savings, and withdraw everything in the current. Then close the current with a zero balance. You can do all these over the phone, including transferring the money to another bank, unless you want to withdraw in cash.

If there is a "dormancy block" whatever that is, surely paying £100 or even 1p into each account would lift it? (Again can be done from home)

I don't see why anyone bothers with cheques to close an account, surely you would get all your money out first. If something goes wrong I bet they will try to fob you off saying that since you have closed your accounts you are not their customer any more.
