o2's iPhone 3GS 8GB Basics @ £18.50pcm
Hi everyone
I've been persuaded io get an iPhone as they are uber cool and I'm an App glutten.
As my expendable income isn't great I've been looking out for the cheapest deal I can get. While Martin Lewis' article is good, o2 are actually offering something considerably less with the iPhone 3gs free.
They are offering their basics package, which is 100mb of data with 500 text messages with 100 minutes over 24 months - no doubt some would use tonnes more but I'm more after the technology.
This is at £18.50 per month across 24 months. The phone is free.
Is this a good deal? Or am I just kidding myself? I did search MSE but couldn't find anything on this specific package.
I look forward to reading your responses!
best wishes

The phone is not 'free'. It's a substantial part of the £444 you'll be paying over 2 years. The airtime may be adequate for a light user, but how far do you think 100MB data is going to go per month if you intend to use it as a smartphone (little point in having it if you don't)? Have you checked what rate you'll be paying once you go over that in the first week of the month? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

100Mb is a very small amount unless you are going to use it mainly on WiFi.
I didn't read the article, but do you know about 50+500Mb for 24x£16.50? 100+500Mb for 24x£21.50?0 -
Why not look on ebay, and look into giffgaff too.0

i wouldnt sign up for a 2 year contract on a 2 year old model - its likely that the 3gs wont get any more updates and then its possible that some apps wont work on them0
-
The 3GS is getting the next version of the operating system.
But I agree - it will be a VERY old model by the time the contract ends.
Only you will know if 100mb of data is enough. I am a heavy user, and have used a grand total of 1.25GB in 15 months. Wherever there is known WiFi my phone connects to that instead.0 -

could possibly be the last, im basing my assumptions on the 3G which is a year older than the 3GS which didnt get the last os update
i find my 3g slow and clunky running some apps, i dont get multi tasking (i can do but thats another story) etc so it is likely over the 2 year contract the 3gs will go the same way
me thinks they are just trying to get rid of the old models before the rumoured new one comes out0 -
Hint: Yes I am.
I am a heavy user of data, but not of data over 3G. My point is that only the OP will know what is right for him, not smart !!!!!! like you.
Over a month, just checking for e-mails/Push notifications over 3G could use 100MB (3.3MB a day).
I'd wait for the "New iPhone" !!!! to blow over, but if you NEED one now, iPhone 3Gs for £300 from O2, slap a GiffGaff sim in that.0 -

this sounds like best idea for a light user.
or alternatively if you only are wanting the iphone for apps how about getting an ipod touch (then just a cheaper contract/payg to better suit your usage) thats what ive done. means i get to use all the apps i want and get a cheaper contract on another phone, with more mins/texts than i would get on the equivalent iphone contract x0
